PhD student in acoustic source characterization
Project description
Research education subject: Vehicle Engineering
The position is linked to a project within FFI Nollutsläpp regarding acoustic source characterization of components in electric vehicles, in close collaboration between KTH and Volvo Technology AB.
When vehicles are electrified, noise associated with the internal combustion engine disappears, and sources such as electric motors, cooling fans, and power electronics become dominant. The project develops robust methods to identify and characterize these acoustic sources. The work includes equivalent source models and inverse acoustics for partially coherent source fields, optimal placement of microphone arrays, as well as physics-informed and data-driven machine learning. The methods are linked to virtual pass-by simulation for more cost- and energy-efficient vehicle development.
The PhD student is part of the Sound and Vibration research environment at Marcus Wallenberg Laboratory for Sound and Vibration Research, Institutionen för teknisk mekanik, KTH, and is affiliated with Centrum för ECO2 Vehicle Design. The work is conducted in close collaboration with Volvo Technology AB.
Supervision: Romain Rumpler, Elias Zea, and Susann Boij are proposed to supervise the PhD student. Decisions are made upon admission.
Eligibility for admission
To be admitted to doctoral studies (chap 7 39 § of the Higher Education Ordinance) the applicant must have basic eligibility:
a master's degree, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at an advanced level, or in some other way, within or outside the country, acquired knowledge mainly corresponding to these. The applicant must have knowledge equivalent to at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level in technical mechanics, engineering physics, electrical engineering, vehicle engineering, or another subject relevant to acoustics, sound and vibration, or signal processing.
In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to Engelska B/6.
Selection
To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. During the selection of applicants, the ability to:
independently drive your work forward, collaborate with others, maintain a professional approach, and analyze and work with complex issues, will be assessed.
It is meritorious if the applicant has knowledge of or experience in one or more of the following areas: acoustics, vibrations, structural dynamics, signal processing, inverse methods or microphone arrays, as well as machine learning or physics-informed machine learning. Experience with scientific programming and tools such as Python, MATLAB, TensorFlow/PyTorch, COMSOL, or Actran is also meritorious, as is an interest in collaboration between academia and industry.
Following the eligibility requirements, great importance will be placed on personal qualities.
Target degree: Doctoral degree
Information about admission and employment
Only those admitted to doctoral studies may be employed as a PhD student. The total period of employment may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. An employed PhD student may, to a limited extent (at most 20%), perform certain tasks within, e.g., education and administration. A new employment as a PhD student is valid for at most one year; the employment may thereafter be renewed for at most two years at a time. For studies intended to be completed with a licentiate degree, the total period of employment may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
As a PhD student, you will benefit from KTH's employment benefits and have a monthly salary according to KTH's agreements for PhD salaries. Read more about Forskarstudier vid KTH | KTH | Sweden.
