Transmission System Planning Consultant

Accountabilities Perform transmission system planning studies covering transient stability, power flow, transfer capability, reliability, short-circuit, economic dispatch, and electromagnetic analyses.

Work directly with clients to understand study objectives, establish methodologies, define deliverables, and translate technical requirements into actionable project plans.

Lead portions of project execution, including technical analysis, engineering activities, staffing plans, deliverable development, quality management, and scheduling.

Guide consultants, engineers, and analysts toward study objectives while ensuring practical, technically sound, and viable results.

Partner with project managers to oversee technical execution and maintain alignment between project scope, resources, schedules, and client expectations.

Develop comprehensive study reports documenting assumptions, methodologies, analyses, results, and findings.

Manage multiple projects simultaneously, identify critical-path activities, and proactively address issues that could affect delivery timelines.

Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and on-the-job training to less experienced team members.

Support business development activities by contributing technical expertise to proposals, client discussions, and pursuit opportunities.

Evaluate and adapt engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to address complex transmission planning challenges.

Stay informed about applicable NERC, FERC, regional, and transmission-planning requirements and incorporate them appropriately into technical work.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related discipline from an accredited program.

At least 3 years of relevant experience in electric utility operations, transmission planning, power systems, or engineering consulting.

Strong understanding of transmission system planning processes, electric transmission systems, and power system planning and operations.

Demonstrated ability to independently perform transmission system planning studies and adapt standard engineering methods to complex problems.

Knowledge of transient stability, short-circuit and voltage analysis, production costing, risk assessment, transmission planning compliance, generator interconnection, and harmonics analysis.

Familiarity with NERC and FERC standards, as well as regional requirements, policies, and procedures.

Understanding of major North American power regions and independent system operators, including MISO, ERCOT, PJM, SPP, CAISO, WECC, SERC, NYISO, and ISO-NE.

Strong proficiency with industry software, particularly PSS/E; experience with TARA, Aspen, EasyPower, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, or PROMOD is an advantage.

Strong quantitative, analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving capabilities.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical findings clearly to clients and internal stakeholders.

Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, collaboration, and team-building abilities.

Ability to manage competing priorities, work independently, and perform effectively under pressure and tight deadlines.

Experience leading, educating, or mentoring engineers and analysts is beneficial.

A master’s degree in engineering with two years of related experience or a Ph.D. in engineering with one year of related experience is an advantage.

Experience with generator interconnection, harmonics analysis, production costing, or risk assessment techniques is a plus.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Willingness to travel up to 10% for business needs.
