Sr Principal Controls Engineer
Accountabilities Define and own scalable, reliable, and maintainable control-system architectures spanning PLCs, IPC-based systems, SCADA, BMS, EPMS, MES, and related platforms.
Lead the development and implementation of PLC and IPC-based control systems using technologies such as Siemens, Rockwell, Schneider, Beckhoff, and Codesys.
Design and deploy SCADA and HMI solutions across platforms including Ignition, WinCC, FactoryTalk, and AVEVA.
Develop structured, modular, reusable control logic in accordance with IEC 61131-3 programming standards.
Produce and review detailed engineering documentation, including Functional Design Specifications, Sequences of Operation, I/O lists, Cause & Effect matrices, alarm matrices, and interface definitions.
Create and review electrical schematics, control diagrams, bills of materials, and other technical design documentation.
Define control logic, sensor integration strategies, and industrial communication architectures using protocols such as Modbus, BACnet, OPC UA, Ethernet/IP, and SNMP.
Integrate control systems with BMS, EPMS, SCADA, MES, and cloud-based platforms to enable reliable data exchange and interoperability.
Lead Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), ensuring systems meet reliability, safety, functionality, and performance requirements.
Support commissioning, troubleshooting, optimization, and root-cause analysis of complex control systems in operational environments.
Design and support automation solutions for mission-critical infrastructure, including UPS systems, generators, switchgear, chillers, liquid-cooling systems, CRAC/CRAH units, and fire-protection systems.
Establish control-system design standards, engineering best practices, and reusable frameworks to promote consistent and scalable implementation.
Lead system-level simulations and validation activities, including digital-twin initiatives where applicable.
Evaluate emerging automation technologies and trends to identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reliability, and system performance.
Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, software, facilities, and other engineering disciplines to ensure seamless integration between control systems and physical infrastructure.
Facilitate technical reviews, workshops, planning sessions, and stakeholder discussions while aligning designs with business requirements, project schedules, and operational constraints.
Provide technical leadership, mentor engineering teams, influence stakeholders, and contribute to the resolution of complex engineering challenges.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related technical discipline; a Master’s degree is preferred.
8+ years of professional experience designing and implementing control systems, ideally in complex industrial, infrastructure, or mission-critical environments.
Deep hands-on expertise in PLC and IPC programming, particularly with platforms such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, and Beckhoff.
Strong experience developing and deploying SCADA and HMI solutions across multiple platforms, including Ignition, WinCC, FactoryTalk, or AVEVA.
Demonstrated experience integrating and optimizing Building Management Systems (BMS) and Energy and Power Management Systems (EPMS).
Strong knowledge of industrial communication protocols, including Modbus, BACnet, OPC UA, and Ethernet/IP; familiarity with SNMP is beneficial.
Experience with mission-critical infrastructure and systems such as UPS, generators, switchgear, chillers, liquid cooling, and CRAC/CRAH equipment.
Familiarity with NFPA, IEC, and ISO standards relevant to control systems, electrical infrastructure, and safety.
Understanding of low- and medium-voltage electrical systems and their integration with automation and control architectures.
Experience leading FAT/SAT activities, commissioning, troubleshooting, system optimization, and root-cause analysis.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, and technical documentation skills, with the ability to interpret engineering standards, regulations, and technical specifications.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership abilities, with confidence influencing stakeholders and mentoring engineering teams.
Ability to work independently, take ownership of complex technical initiatives, and collaborate effectively within global, multidisciplinary teams.
Familiarity with engineering and product lifecycle tools such as EPLAN, AutoCAD, Windchill, or SolidWorks, as well as DevOps practices, is a plus.
Experience with hyperscale or colocation data-center environments, digital-twin technologies, or predictive-maintenance strategies is preferred.
An active Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.
