Accountabilities: Evaluate and underwrite mild to moderately complex life insurance applications, using medical and non-medical underwriting practices and exercising independent judgment within established authority limits.

Analyze medical histories, disease processes, mortality and morbidity factors, financial information, and other evidence of insurability to determine appropriate risk classifications and offers.

Identify when additional underwriting requirements are necessary and authorize items such as medical examinations, blood profiles, attending physician statements, inspection reports, interviews, and other supporting documentation.

Apply accelerated and intelligent underwriting approaches, including fluid-less underwriting and alternative sources of medical information, while maintaining appropriate risk tolerance.

Conduct financial underwriting by evaluating personal and business financial information, establishing insurable interest, and assessing complex beneficiary or ownership arrangements.

Coordinate automatic and facultative reinsurance within applicable treaty terms, product requirements, and market practices, while maintaining effective relationships with reinsurance partners.

Build strong relationships with agents, financial professionals, field partners, applicants, internal associates, medical resources, and external providers to understand needs and resolve underwriting questions.

Participate in meetings with field partners, gather feedback, and use market insights to improve service, application quality, underwriting efficiency, and customer experience.

Determine eligibility for temporary insurance and authorize applicable policy refunds or reimbursement of fees associated with underwriting requirements.

Consult with senior underwriting and medical resources when cases require additional expertise, judgment, or escalation.

Support territory objectives, special agent programs, contests, and broader underwriting goals while maintaining high standards for turnaround time, quality, and risk selection.

Maintain strong knowledge of underwriting manuals, medical factors, regulations, administrative systems, products, reinsurance practices, and evolving life insurance underwriting standards.

Provide underwriting sign-off within authorized limits, including up to $3 million for life insurance and applicable authority for morbidity and intelligent underwriting exceptions.

Requirements:

At least 2 years of life underwriting experience, relevant medical experience, or successful completion of an applicable underwriting training program.

Undergraduate study in a medical-related discipline, insurance, risk management, economics, finance, business management, marketing, or a related field is preferred.

LOMA Level 1 certification, including LOMA 280 and 290, is preferred; participation in or completion of ALU Level 1 coursework is also valued.

Solid understanding of medical underwriting, including anatomy, disease processes, mortality and morbidity risk, and the ability to translate medical information into appropriate risk classifications.

Demonstrated foundation in financial underwriting, including the ability to assess financial supplements, sophisticated beneficiary arrangements, buy/sell agreements, and foreign risks.

Working knowledge of life insurance products, reinsurance practices, underwriting guidelines, and administrative systems, with the ability to collaborate effectively with facultative reinsurance partners.

Strong analytical and decision-making skills, with the ability to assess complex information, balance risk and business considerations, and make well-reasoned underwriting recommendations.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly when explaining underwriting decisions and alternative offers to agents, advisors, sales leaders, applicants, policyholders, and internal stakeholders.

Ability to anticipate customer and partner needs, proactively resolve challenges, and maintain a strong focus on service, quality, and timely execution.

Strong organizational skills and the ability to independently prioritize work while meeting established time, service, and quality standards.

Comfortable working autonomously while recognizing when to seek guidance from senior underwriters, underwriting consultants, medical professionals, or other subject-matter experts.

Willingness to work occasional non-standard hours and travel when business needs require.

Benefits:

Salary: National salary range of $69,500–$129,000 , with an expected starting range of $69,500–$103,500 , depending on skills, experience, credentials, education, training, geographic location, and other factors.
