Quality Engineering Lead
Accountabilities: Quality Strategy: Define the quality strategy and standards for the product, establish what good quality looks like at each development stage, and determine how quality should be measured.
Team Leadership: Manage and develop a team of 1–2 Quality Engineers while remaining hands-on technically and maintaining a high hiring and performance standard.
Lifecycle Quality: Introduce meaningful quality feedback points throughout the product lifecycle, from requirements and technical design through implementation and release.
Test Planning: Review and challenge test plans before development work begins, ensuring appropriate coverage and quality expectations are established early.
Defect Management: Lead bug triage processes and maintain systems for tracking defects, identifying trends, and providing recommendations that help engineering and product leaders prioritize improvements.
Exploratory Testing: Personally perform exploratory testing on new and existing functionality, with particular attention to system boundaries and integration points.
Quality Tooling: Support automated testing, CI pipelines, observability, and other quality tooling when these capabilities help engineering teams move faster without removing ownership from them.
Technical Contribution: Occasionally contribute directly to fixes when doing so helps engineering teams resolve issues efficiently.
Root Cause Analysis: Own root cause analysis for escaped defects and production incidents, documenting findings clearly and sharing lessons broadly.
Incident Learning: Participate in incident reviews and ensure production issues feed back into development and quality practices to reduce the likelihood of recurring defect patterns.
People Development: Mentor direct reports, support their technical and professional growth, and maintain strong quality standards as the team expands.
Cross-Functional Communication: Communicate quality risks, trends, and recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders, including engineering and product leadership.
Requirements
Professional Experience: 5+ years building, shipping, and supporting production software as an engineer, quality engineer, SRE, or in a related technical role.
Leadership Experience: 2+ years leading or mentoring engineers as a manager or technical lead.
Quality Engineering: Strong knowledge of quality tooling, including CI pipelines, automated testing, observability, and related engineering practices.
Quality Ownership: Ability to establish and raise quality standards for a product or codebase even when another engineering team owns the underlying implementation.
Communication: Demonstrated ability to communicate objectively and clearly about software quality with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including when delivering difficult or unexpected findings.
Data & Reporting: Ability to summarize quality trends for engineering and product leadership in concise, actionable terms.
Debugging Mindset: Strong curiosity and investigative instincts, with an ability to understand complex systems and identify root causes rather than focusing only on symptoms.
Influence: Comfortable improving quality through evidence, collaboration, and relationships rather than relying solely on formal authority or process gates.
People Leadership: Strong coaching and mentoring skills, with a people-first approach that combines high standards with thoughtful feedback and development.
Preferred Experience: Previous experience in healthcare or health technology is a plus.
AI & Engineering Practices: Experience thoughtfully using AI tooling to support developer productivity, code quality, and engineering best practices is desirable.
Benefits
Base Salary: $200,000–$235,000 annually, with the range potentially varying if the role is hired at a different level.
Equity: Equity included as part of the overall total compensation package.
Benefits: Benefits are provided as part of the broader total compensation package.
Remote Work: Remote position with flexibility to work remotely.
Leadership Scope: Opportunity to lead and grow a quality engineering function while remaining hands-on technically.
Technical Impact: Significant ownership over quality strategy, engineering feedback loops, defect prevention, and continuous improvement.
Mission-Driven Environment: Opportunity to contribute to technology supporting people with cancer and the teams involved in their care.
Professional Development: Exposure to modern quality engineering, automation, observability, AI tooling, and cross-functional engineering practices.
