Network Designer, IP & Services
Your tasks
- Network Architecture and Standards: Develop and maintain reference architectures for Internet, voice, video, IP core, transport, and corporate LAN/WLAN environments. Establish consistent design standards, IP addressing schemes, naming conventions, and documentation templates while incorporating security, scalability, resiliency, and operational requirements.
- Network and Service Design: Produce high-level and low-level network designs for new services, infrastructure expansions, and technology upgrades. Design broadband access solutions across FTTH, multi-dwelling unit (MDU), coaxial, and fixed wireless environments, as well as voice, IPTV, OTT, multicast, and QoS-enabled services. Develop architectures for IP/MPLS core networks, DWDM transport systems, carrier interconnections, and enterprise networking environments.
- Capacity and Lifecycle Planning: Forecast network utilization and develop capacity plans across access, core, transport, and service platforms. Identify end-of-life infrastructure, recommend replacement strategies, evaluate opportunities to improve performance and reliability, and contribute to long-term network modernization and technology roadmaps.
- Technical Documentation and Records Management: Prepare implementation-ready design packages, including network diagrams, routing policies, IP and VLAN assignments, QoS specifications, and acceptance criteria. Maintain accurate network records, validate deployment and commissioning results against design objectives, and reconcile engineering documentation with as-built field information.
- Materials, Cost Estimation, and Procurement Support: Prepare bills of materials (BOMs) covering network hardware, optics, software licenses, and associated infrastructure. Develop project cost estimates and support capital planning, funding applications, business cases, and project reporting. Evaluate vendor solutions and emerging technologies through technical reviews, vendor consultations, and proof-of-concept testing.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration and Project Delivery: Partner with project managers, engineering teams, network operations, outside plant, transport, facilities, and power teams to coordinate integrated design solutions. Identify project dependencies and technical risks, review designs before implementation, provide technical guidance during deployments, and assist with troubleshooting and design-related inquiries.
Requirements
- Education and Professional Experience: A diploma or degree in networking, telecommunications, engineering technology, computer science, or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience. At least five years of experience in network design, network engineering, or network architecture within a telecommunications or service provider environment.
- IP Networking Expertise: Strong knowledge of IP routing and switching technologies, including BGP, OSPF, MPLS, EVPN, and Quality of Service (QoS).
- Telecommunications Technologies: Working knowledge of service provider access and transport technologies, including GPON, XGS-PON, DOCSIS, DWDM, IPTV multicast, and VoIP.
- Network Design and Documentation: Demonstrated experience producing detailed network architectures, high-level and low-level designs, technical diagrams, IP addressing plans, and implementation documentation.
- Capacity Planning and Infrastructure Modernization: Experience developing network capacity forecasts, managing infrastructure lifecycles, evaluating technology options, and planning network upgrades and replacements.
- Communication and Collaboration: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical requirements into clear documentation. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams and project stakeholders.
- Professional Judgment and Information Security: Ability to handle confidential and sensitive network information responsibly, maintain accurate technical records, and follow established security and design standards.
- Background and Security Clearance: Successful completion of a background check and eligibility to obtain and maintain Government of Canada security clearance.
