Coding Supervisor / Coding Team Lead
Accountabilities Serve as the primary point of contact for VA HIMS supervisors and coding leads, maintaining availability during required Eastern Time business hours.
Assign coding work, monitor productivity and turnaround times, and proactively communicate risks when facility deadlines may not be met.
Conduct ongoing quality reviews covering at least 5% of coded data, including ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, DRGs, and abstracted data, and provide weekly facility-level results.
Develop corrective action plans and coach coders when accuracy falls below the required 95% threshold.
Respond to coder questions involving documentation and coding interpretation, escalating complex issues to appropriate VA contacts when necessary.
Coordinate record re-reviews requested before billing and support responses to claim denials.
Prepare and contribute to monthly progress reports, quarterly summaries, kickoff materials, work plans, staffing rosters, and training documentation.
Train coding staff on VA policies, VHA coding guidelines, and VistA and CPRS workflows while monitoring required training and background-investigation requirements.
Anticipate staffing changes and coordinate transition plans, including required overlap periods when coders are reassigned.
Requirements
Hold an active RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, or CPC-H credential.
Have at least 3 years of professional coding experience , together with supervisory, team-lead, or coding quality-assurance experience.
Demonstrate strong knowledge of inpatient and outpatient coding, including ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS, DRGs, E/M, and NCCI edits.
Have completed an accredited coding, Health Information Management, or Health Information Technician program.
Possess strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with healthcare professionals, VA leaders, clinicians, and distributed team members.
Be a U.S. citizen and able to successfully complete a federal background investigation, including NACI and fingerprinting.
Experience with VA/VHA HIMS environments and systems such as VistA, CPRS, PTF, PCE, and Integrated Billing is preferred.
Experience managing remote coding teams across multiple facilities and/or a background in coding auditing or QA is highly desirable.
Complete required annual VA Privacy and Information Security Awareness and HIPAA training, including TMS 10176 and 10203.
Demonstrate strong organization, accountability, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple facilities and competing priorities in a remote environment.
Benefits
$30.00–$35.00 per hour .
