Experienced Backend Developer at IST

About the company

IST develops software for the education sector across Scandinavia. In Denmark, our system Studie+ handles student administration for vocational colleges, upper secondary schools, AMU, FGU and VUC. It’s a business-critical platform where data quality matters every single day.

Your tasks

We’re now looking for a senior backend developer to take ownership of development and data quality in Studie+. You’ll work in Java Spring Boot and PostgreSQL, act as the team’s database expert, and play a key role in migrating data from other systems into our platform. Like the rest of the team, you’ll use AI tools as a natural part of your day, for coding, reviews and documentation. We don’t expect you to be an expert, just curious and willing to make the most of them.

• Developing REST services in Java Spring Boot, deployed on Tomcat
• Designing and maintaining data structures in PostgreSQL, acting as the development team's go-to database expert
• Critically reviewing SQL and migration scripts
• Contributing to data migration projects from external sources
• Contributing to the CI/CD pipeline and the containerisation of services

Requirements

What we expect from you

• Solid, proven experience with Java Spring Boot and REST services
• Strong PostgreSQL/SQL skills, including experience in quality-assuring other developers' SQL and migrations
• Experience designing and maintaining data structures in a production environment
• Familiarity with Tomcat as an application server
• A security-first mindset built into your solutions

Nice to have

• Experience with Docker
• Experience with TeamCity (CI/CD)
• Experience with Gradle
• Experience with SOAP integrations

Educational background A Professional Bachelor's degree in Software Development, a Bachelor of Engineering, or an MSc in Engineering or Computer Science. As this is a senior position, however, we place greater weight on proven hands-on experience with Java, PostgreSQL and data migration than on any specific degree.

We are looking for a senior, experienced profile, typically with 5+ years of relevant experience.

At IST, we apply an office-first policy, meaning we primarily work from the office as we believe physical presence fosters collaboration, innovation, and a strong team spirit. At the same time, we understand the importance of flexibility, if you live farther away, working from the office three days a week with the remaining time remote may be possible.
