Technical Engineer (RFID and Access Control Systems)

Job Summary

Responsible for the installation, configuration, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of turnstile, access control and associated low-voltage systems, and RFID systems. The role involves integrating turnstile and other physical access-control equipment with RFID readers, card systems, biometric devices, license plate recognition systems, fire alarm interfaces, and other building security systems.

The position requires hands-on technical competency in RFID solutions, turnstile, access control systems, low-voltage systems and system integration. Basic electrical wiring (240V equipment) and cable termination skills are essential.

Key Responsibilities

Turnstile and Access Control Systems

• Conduct site surveys and plan turnstile layouts prior to installation.
• Installation and configuration of various types of turnstiles, including swing gates, flap barriers, tripod turnstiles, and other pedestrian access-control equipment.
• Integrate turnstiles with access-control systems, RFID/card readers, biometric devices, QR/barcode readers, other identification systems, and fire alarm systems.
• Diagnose and rectify mechanical, electrical, communication, and integration issues during installation and maintenance.

RFID Systems

• Analyse user and site requirements and develop suitable RFID solutions for access control, asset tracking, identification, automated entry/exit applications, etc.
• Good understanding of RFID technology, including RFID antenna types, polarization, and RF fundamentals is required. Experience using a VNA and interpreting Smith Charts is an advantage.
• Conduct RFID site surveys, proof-of-concept testing, prototyping, and read-performance validation.
• Configure RFID readers and parameters.
• Troubleshoot RFID read-range, missed-read, false-read, interference, multipath, tag orientation, and environmental issues.

Prerequisites

• Degree/Diploma/ITE or equivalent in Electronics or Computer Engineering or a related technical field.
• Relevant experience in access control, turnstile, RFID or electronic systems installation.
• Intermediate soldering skills (small components) is advantageous.
• Comfortable working on-site and performing hands-on installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
• Able to work independently as well as coordinate with project managers, contractors, IT teams, and other system integrators.
• Relevant construction and workplace safety certifications, such as AWSHCS (CSOC) and WSHMCI (BCSS), are an advantage.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to research, evaluate, and develop alternative solutions to technical challenges.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
