At the Helmut-Schmidt-Universität/Universität der Bundeswehr Hamburg (HSU/UniBw H), Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Professorship for Laser Technology (Univ.-Prof. Dr. Pronin), a position for a/an

Research Associate (m/f/d)

(Pay group 13 Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst (TVöD); 26 hours per week)

is to be filled starting at the earliest possible date, limited for a duration of 2 years.

The research focus of the professorship is civilian laser fundamental research with a special emphasis on applications in spectroscopy. The subject areas range from the development of XUV frequency combs to the investigation of nonlinear effects in multipass cells as well as laser-matter interaction at pulse durations below 50 fs. The newly developed laser systems and spectroscopy methods offer a wide range of application potential in precise XUV spectroscopy as well as next-generation ultra-precise material processing.

The focus of future activities is next-generation ultra-precise material processing with pulses of less than 50 fs at a wavelength of 1030 nm and its harmonics (515 nm, 343 nm). In this context, various transparent materials such as glasses, SiC, diamond, polymers, and ceramics are to be investigated, and ablation, cutting, as well as nonlinear refractive index changes are to be researched. Selective etching will be used for this purpose to clean the surface and create holes and channels in the glass materials for future chip packaging applications. The ablation and cutting are carried out using galvo scanner systems and special XY translation stages with nano-positioning accuracy.

Field of activities:

  • Investigation of various nonlinear conversion processes for the fundamental wavelength 1030 nm with the aim of generating second and third harmonics with maximum efficiency at a pulse duration of ≤50 fs
  • Investigation of the interaction of ≤ 50 fs pulses at 1030 nm, 515 nm, and 343 nm with various materials
  • Systematic analysis of the results using a laser scanning microscope and an electron microscope, as well as data evaluation
  • Application of the developed technologies in drilling, cutting, and other processes with industrial relevance
  • Participation in teaching to a volume of basically 2.0 trimester weekly hours
  • Opportunity for scientific further qualification (e.g., doctorate or habilitation)
  • Completion of administrative tasks of a general nature as well as academic activities in academic self-administration

Qualification requirements:

  • A university degree completed with good success (Diplom [univ.] or Master) in the fields of physics or engineering

Furthermore desirable:

  • Experience with nonlinear optics, especially with the generation of second and third harmonics with femtosecond pulses
  • Experience with techniques for characterizing ultrashort pulses such as autocorrelators or FROG
  • Experience with electronics and programming of microcontrollers
  • Foreign language skills in English with a proficiency level that corresponds to at least the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference
  • High motivation, ability to work in a team, and creative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as commitment and flexibility
  • Strong interest in scientific work as well as the ability to teach

What counts for you:

  • Capital-forming benefits
  • Annual special payment
  • Company pension scheme
  • Flexible working hours
  • DeutschlandJobTicket with employer subsidy, provided the necessary requirements are met
  • Possibility of using a childcare place in a daycare center located near the campus, provided the necessary requirements are met
  • You benefit from targeted personnel development and an extensive range of further and advanced training
  • Low-cost catering option in the campus canteen with three meals per day
  • Possibility of participating in the Corporate-Benefits program
  • You have the opportunity to participate in occupational health promotion offers (Further information can be found at: www.hsu-hh.de/bgm (https://www.hsu-hh.de/bgm)).
  • Free parking on the campus grounds
  • Possibility to use the Bundeswehr's own carsharing (Further information can be found at: www.bwcarsharing.de (http://www.bwcarsharing.de))

For technical questions, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Pronin will provide information, Tel.: 040/6541-2756 or via e-mail: oleg.pronin@hsu-hh.de (https://mailto:[oleg.pronin@hsu-hh.de](oleg.pronin@hsu-hh.de)).

The employment relationship is governed by the provisions of the Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst (TVöD) in conjunction with the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (WissZeitVG). The activities basically correspond to pay group 13. The classification up to pay group 13 TVöD is carried out in compliance with § 12 TVöD with regard to the activities that are actually not only temporary and the fulfillment of the personal or collective agreement requirements (activity characteristics).

Part-time employment is possible.
