Collection Manager for the St. Annen-Museum | Manager of the Holstentor Museum and Katharinenkirche (EG 13)
With its collection and monastic architecture, the St. Annen-Museum is one of the most significant museums in the field of medieval art in Germany. In addition to sacred art, the museum's other collection focus is on witnesses of the civic art and culture of Lübeck.
Together with the Kunsthalle St. Annen, it forms the Museumsquartier St. Annen.

As Collection Manager, you will be responsible for the supervision and further development of the collections and the permanent exhibition, as well as the conception, supervision, and implementation of forward-looking special exhibitions and events. Against the backdrop of current challenges, we are continuously developing our collections, exhibitions, and mediation offers. In doing so, we combine excellent research with innovative exhibition formats, digital transformation, diversity, inclusion, and a consistent opening of the museum as a relevant cultural site for different social groups.
For the position to be filled, we are looking for a committed and team-oriented personality who will report directly to the management of the Museumsquartier. You will independently manage the Holstentor Museum and the Katharinenkirche.
The area of responsibility includes
- the development of innovative ideas and impulses for the conceptual further development of diversity-oriented collection, research, and exhibition work, as well as the co-development of inclusive and non-discriminatory mediation work for the St. Annen-Museum, the Holstentor Museum, and the Katharinenkirche
- project management for the permanent and special exhibitions and events of the St. Annen-Museum in coordination with the management of the Museumquartier and the Holstentor, and in the Katharinenkirche in coordination with the Leading Director of the LÜBECKER MUSEEN
- participation in the future-oriented conception for the repositioning of the Museumsquartier in coordination with the Leading Director and the management of the Museumquartier
- the leadership of the scientific staff of the St. Annen-Museum, supervision of the volunteer team of the Katharinenkirche, and supervision of the Friends' Association
- the supervision of structural measures and verification of safety standards together with the Leading Director and the management of the Museumquartier
- the inventorying of the collection stock in the inventory program Daphne, verification of the stock, preparation for online display, and writing object descriptions
- the processing of provenances and damage registers in cooperation with restoration
- the publication of research results for various audiences
- the processing of inquiries, loan traffic, and visiting scholars
- the planning and administration of project budgets, tendering and awarding of services, requests for loans, and securing third-party funds
- regular guided tours
- participation in the editorial work of the St. Annen-Museum website in cooperation with the Marketing staff unit and the management of the Museumquartier; coordination and monitoring of social media channel content
Requirements are
- a completed university degree (Master, Magister, or Diplom (Universität)) in Art History with a focus on the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period
- several years of professional experience in curating exhibitions as well as experience in developing creative and new formats and approaches
- enjoyment in opening up new perspectives on the collection through international, interdisciplinary, inclusive, and transcultural approaches with a view to current social, cultural-historical, and global discourses
- extensive professional experience in scientific inventorying and digitalization
- a proven record of scientific activity and publication experience
- networking with museum-relevant university and scientific institutions as well as with local communities
- enjoyment of working in a team, a friendly and confident appearance, and experience in motivating and guiding employees
- experience in securing third-party funds and donations
- entrepreneurial thinking, creativity, and a willingness for above-average commitment
- cooperation and communication skills, strong negotiation skills, and business-fluent English
Advantageous for the application are:

The average regular weekly working time is 39 hours; the tasks are evaluated according to pay group EG13 TVöD. You can find the corresponding pay table in our FAQs.
Part-time working models may be possible by arrangement. The tasks require attendance at appointments also in the afternoon/evening hours, sometimes also outside of usual working hours, e.g., on weekends.
