Product Development Engineer (Hardware)
This is a part-time, hourly paid role, with conversion to full-time role after 1-2 months. You will be engaged based on specific product development and engineering projects. The scope and estimated hours will be discussed and agreed upon before employment. About the role You'll be involved in the development and improvement of physical products, with a strong focus on metal components, mechanical structures and hardware design. You'll work from initial concepts through prototyping, testing and manufacturing, ensuring that products are practical, reliable and suitable for mass production. Key responsibilities Develop and engineer physical products and mechanical components
Create 3D CAD models, assemblies and detailed engineering drawings
Design primarily for metal fabrication and manufacturing
Develop mechanisms, structures, brackets, joints and other hardware components
Review product designs for manufacturability, strength, assembly and cost
Determine suitable materials, dimensions, tolerances and manufacturing processes
Build and evaluate prototypes and make improvements based on testing
Troubleshoot mechanical and structural issues in existing products
Improve existing products for better performance, durability and ease of manufacture
Work with manufacturers and suppliers to resolve engineering and production issues
About you Background in Mechanical Engineering, Product Engineering, Industrial Design Engineering or a related field
Strong experience with hardware or physical product development
Proficient in CAD software such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Inventor or similar
Good understanding of metal fabrication and manufacturing processes, such as sheet metal, CNC machining, bending, welding, laser cutting and related processes
Able to produce clear and accurate engineering drawings for manufacturing
Understanding of tolerances, fits, fasteners, materials and mechanical assemblies
Able to design with manufacturability and cost in mind
Comfortable developing and improving products through prototyping and testing
Able to communicate effectively with manufacturers and suppliers
