Postdoctoral Researcher in Biomarker Research within Neurodegenerative Diseases
University of Gothenburg meets societal challenges with versatile knowledge. 58,000 students and 6,800 employees make the university a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive education programs attract researchers and students from all over the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, University of Gothenburg contributes to a better future.
At the Department of Neuroscience and Physiology at Sahlgrenska akademin, extensive research and teaching are conducted across large knowledge areas from molecule to human. The operations consist of five sections; pharmacology, physiology, health and rehabilitation, clinical neuroscience, as well as psychiatry and neurochemistry.
The Department of Neuroscience and Physiology is now seeking a postdoctoral researcher, with placement at the Section for Psychiatry and Neurochemistry.
At the Section for Psychiatry and Neurochemistry at Sahlgrenska akademin, neurochemical research is focused on identifying and studying pathophysiology and pathological changes in neurodegenerative diseases. We offer a dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment.
Subject
Biomarker research within neurodegenerative diseases
Subject description
The employment is linked to the Swedish cohort study REAL AD, which validates a realistic screening method for early Alzheimer's disease and includes research on new and established biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease – fluid-based, imaging, and digital – in the general population. All projects are part of local, national, and international collaborations with interdisciplinary research groups led by world-leading researchers.
Tasks
The postdoctoral researcher will work with projects focusing on associations between new, digitized methods for evaluating cognition and blood-, liquor-, and neuroradiology-based biomarkers for the disease's neuropathology, with the aim of detecting the earliest signs of Alzheimer's disease in the general population, based on a regional primary care infrastructure. Extensive longitudinal cognition and biomarker data are already available, supplemented with register-based health-related participant data as well as data on sleep and viral infections.
The postdoctoral researcher is expected to develop their own research projects and actively engage in writing and publishing scientific articles, presenting research at international conferences, and applying for external research grants. The employment is fully funded.
Eligibility
Eligibility for employment as a teacher is regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 and University of Gothenburg's employment regulations.
Those eligible to be employed as a postdoctoral researcher are those who have obtained a doctoral degree, an artistic doctoral degree, or hold a foreign degree assessed to correspond to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
In the first instance, consideration should be given to those who have obtained their degree no more than three years before the end of the application period. Those who obtained their degree earlier should also be considered in the first instance if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within trade unions, service within the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.
Eligible to be employed as a postdoctoral researcher for this call are those holding a doctoral degree in statistics, neuroscience, computer science, medicine, or similar.
Assessment criteria
Basic requirements include very good understanding of statistics as well as biomarker analysis and modeling, experience in coding (Python/Matlab/R/Bash etc.), excellent English skills in speaking and writing, experience in the field of neurodegenerative diseases, as well as knowledge of AI/ML-based methods. We place great emphasis on the ability to collaborate and want to ensure that the successful candidate will be a proactive and productive member of our group; therefore, great importance will be placed on personal qualities and suitability.
Employment
The employment is a fixed-term position for 2 years, 100% full-time, with placement until further notice at the Department of Neuroscience and Physiology. Commencement: as soon as possible or by agreement.
