University of Gothenburg meets the challenges of society with versatile knowledge. 38,000 students and 6,000 employees make the university a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive education programs attract researchers and students from all over the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, University of Gothenburg contributes to a better future.

Project title: Role of adiponectin in the development of rheumatoid arthritis

Duties General information about doctoral education: Education in medical science corresponds to studies of a total of 240 higher education credits. The education is conducted full-time and is intended to lead to a doctoral degree. The education consists of conducting a scientific project and participating in doctoral-level courses of at least 30 higher education credits. The education concludes with the doctoral student writing a scientific compilation thesis or a monograph equivalent to at least 120 higher education credits. For more information about doctoral education at Sahlgrenska akademin see https://medarbetarportalen.gu.se/sahlgrenskaakademin/forskarutbildning/

Project: The purpose of the research project is to understand the role of adiponectin in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects approximately 1% of the Swedish population. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis have elevated levels of adiponectin in both blood and synovial fluid. Adiponectin is a cytokine produced by adipose tissue (i.e., an adipokine). Adiponectin is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and is associated with a favorable metabolic profile. However, new studies show that adiponectin also has pro-inflammatory effects on various cell types. Our hypothesis is that adiponectin affects the development of rheumatoid arthritis. We will test this hypothesis by using a wide spectrum of methods and technologies within molecular biology, immunology, and genetics. The project will involve independent laboratory work with cell culture, analysis of data from large patient cohorts, as well as collaboration with clinicians, epidemiologists, and other research groups.

We are seeking an enthusiastic PhD student for our research group at the department of rheumatology and inflammation research. The successful applicant will be actively involved in the research group's work with the aim of providing new knowledge about the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis, a common chronic rheumatic disease. The doctoral student will have the opportunity to present the project's results at national and international conferences and will receive extensive mentorship and support for further career development.

Qualifications Admission to doctoral education requires both basic and special qualifications. Basic qualification for doctoral education is held by those who:

  1. have completed a degree at an advanced level, or
  2. have completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at an advanced level, or
  3. have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge within or outside the country.

Special qualification for doctoral education is held by those who, with a passing grade, have completed course engelska B/6 or have been assessed to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies.

Employment Fixed-term employment for 4 years, with a scope of 100%. Placement: Sahlgrenska akademin, institutionen för medicin, avdelningen för reumatologi och inflammationsforskning. Start date according to agreement.
