Peace and development studies at the Department of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg, announces a PhD position focusing on host states' responses to transnational repression. This refers in a broad sense to authoritarian regimes' attempts to punish, deter, undermine, and silence activism in the diaspora. With a comparative perspective on two to three Nordic-Baltic countries (Sweden, Norway and/or Estonia), the doctoral student can, for example, study dimensions such as:
the degree of awareness among officials working with law enforcement, border control, migration and/or cybersecurity. host states' outreach towards migrants and diasporas who are particularly vulnerable. forms of cooperation between government agencies and civil society organizations. routines for reporting incidents of TNR. investigation and prosecution of perpetrators. and/or other topics of relevance to TNR.
