At the Department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory of Science (FLoV) within the Faculty of Humanities, we have approximately 120 employees and a teaching volume comprising about 350 full-time students. Subject Description Linguistic interaction is the overarching research profile for linguistics at FLoV. The profile encompasses the study of language as a structured system, a socio-cognitive ability, and a situated action. It thus includes both formal and/or computationally oriented modeling of the convention systems that constitute individual languages and studies of the social practices and psychosocial mechanisms that enable language use.
Research within the subject includes psycholinguistic, sociolinguistic, and typological perspectives. Within psycholinguistics, language is studied in relation to perception, language processing, language learning, and production. Within sociolinguistics and language typology, linguistic variation and diversity in and between languages, language families, and social groups are investigated.
The subject also touches upon broader philosophical and societal questions regarding meaning, interpretation, normativity, categorization, and the conditions for linguistic understanding. Such questions are particularly significant in contexts where language is used and circulates in institutional, technical, and public environments, thereby shaping how knowledge, action, and shared understanding are organized. Consequently, the social and societal conditions of language also become central, for example, how communicative practices are shaped by technical infrastructure, social conventions, and changing public contexts.
Linguistics at FLoV thus combines theoretical, empirical, and computationally oriented approaches to language. The subject provides a foundation for investigating linguistic structure, interaction, cognition, diversity, and meaning, while simultaneously contributing to the analysis of the relationship between language, technology, communicative practices, and the societal contexts where language is used and gains meaning.
Duties The employment is a tenure-track position with an emphasis on research and scientific development within linguistics. The duties include research, teaching, and administration.
Research: As an Assistant Professor in linguistics, you are expected to conduct and publish high-quality research of international relevance within your specialization. The position shall provide the opportunity to develop your independence as a researcher and build your own research profile within the subject area. You are also expected to develop applications for external research funding, nationally and internationally, build research networks, collaborate with researchers within and outside the department, and actively contribute to the subject's research environment, including through participation in the subject's research seminar.
Teaching: You are expected to contribute to teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels within linguistics. Teaching may include central areas such as phonetics/phonology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, and sociolinguistics, as well as teaching in programs where linguistics is included, for example, the Master's Programme in Language Technology and the Master's Programme for Communicators in the Public Sector. Teaching can be conducted in Swedish or English. Those who do not master Swedish at the start of employment are expected to gradually be able to contribute to Swedish-language teaching after having achieved the language level specified under eligibility.
Teaching duties include lectures, seminars, examinations, supervision, and teaching administration. You are also expected, to a reasonable extent for a tenure-track position, to contribute to course and curriculum development within the subject area.
Administration: Other duties may also be included in the employment, such as administrative tasks and development work where, as an Assistant Professor, you are expected to participate actively in the department's development and work environment activities, such as workplace meetings and other internal meetings and conferences. The work is primarily to be performed on-site at University of Gothenburg; you are therefore expected to be physically present at the department.
