An established engineering and technology business is seeking an experienced Lead Firmware Engineer to take technical ownership of embedded software development for a range of electronic products.

Your tasks

This is a hands-on engineering position offering the opportunity to lead firmware architecture, development, integration and testing, while working alongside a multidisciplinary product development team.

You will play a key role in delivering reliable, secure and maintainable embedded software, from initial design and development through to product launch and ongoing improvement.

  • Lead the design, development and integration of embedded firmware and graphical user interfaces.
  • Develop and maintain embedded software for ARM-based microcontrollers, particularly STM32 devices.
  • Define software architecture and ensure effective integration between firmware, hardware and user interfaces.
  • Develop software for device control, data processing, communications and system functionality.
  • Design and integrate embedded graphical user interfaces, including display and touchscreen functionality.
  • Manage software requirements, technical documentation, verification and controlled releases.
  • Develop, test and debug embedded software, applying appropriate testing and validation techniques.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams during product development, integration and testing.
  • Support prototype development, production introduction and ongoing product improvements.
  • Promote software development best practices, continuous improvement and knowledge sharing across the team.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to colleagues.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Firmware Engineer looking to combine hands-on technical development with greater responsibility for software architecture, product development and technical leadership.

Requirements

You will be an experienced Embedded Software or Firmware Engineer with strong technical expertise and the confidence to take ownership of software development activities.

You will enjoy remaining hands-on technically while contributing to design decisions, development standards and the wider engineering team.

  • Familiarity with STM32Cube or comparable embedded development environments.
  • Strong understanding of embedded software architecture and real-time systems.
  • Experience integrating firmware with electronic hardware, sensors, displays and communication interfaces.
  • Experience developing embedded graphical user interfaces.
  • Strong debugging, testing and problem-solving skills.
  • Understanding of software version control, documentation and release management.
  • Ability to work independently, make technical decisions and support less experienced engineers.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Experience developing firmware for commercially manufactured electronic products.
  • Knowledge of embedded display controllers and graphical development tools.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols such as SPI, I²C, UART or USB.
  • Experience working within regulated or quality-controlled engineering environments.
