1st Class Able Seaman

A 1st Class Able Seaman reports to the Boatswain and replaces him when necessary. A 1st Class Able Seaman is obliged to: know general information on navigation, the coloring and external characteristics of navigational marking aids, and the main provisions of the COLREGs; keep a navigational watch at the helm, operate the steering device by magnetic compass and gyrocompass, and be able to switch from automatic steering to manual steering and vice versa; operate cargo, anchor, mooring, and other deck machinery and mechanisms; be able to transmit and receive light and flag signaling messages; know the location of cargo holds on the vessel, fresh water tanks, their manholes, sounding and air pipes, and on tankers, in addition, the location of cargo and stripping systems and be able to manipulate the main valve drives (clinkets); perform painting, rigging, and other shipboard work for the maintenance of the hull, masts, and rigging, including work at heights and overboard; be able to operate ship's life-saving appliances by oars and under sail (motor), perform sounding of the lead line and measure depth with a hand lead. The most experienced 1st Class Able Seaman is appointed as Chief Helmsman and ensures cleanliness and order in the chartroom, proper storage and maintenance of signal flags and signs, hand leads, and other navigational equipment.

Requirements

Some requirements for the candidate for the position of 1st Class Able Seaman: Vocational training or secondary vocational education. Completion of mandatory preliminary and periodic medical examinations. Possession of qualification documents. Completion of occupational safety training and testing of knowledge of occupational safety requirements. Medical fitness for work on ships. Completion of fire safety training. Knowledge of English for sea vessel crews.
