Automation Engineer (m/f/d)
This will be your job in the future
- Leading the conception and development of PLC-based control subsystem components to support advanced laser fusion technologies
- Collaborating with scientists and engineers to capture requirements and for the iterative further development of control solutions
- Responsibility for the integration of control systems for essential experimental and infrastructure facilities, including vacuum, pneumatic, and cooling systems
- Development of control software for modern PLC platforms, e.g., Beckhoff TwinCAT, using Structured Text (IEC 61131-3), to ensure machine safety and process control
- Commissioning of complex experimental facilities together with scientists and engineers, including on-site troubleshooting and systematic error analysis
- Specification and implementation of SCADA systems and human-machine interfaces (HMI), including alarm management, logging, data acquisition, and database connectivity
- Participation in establishing team standards and solution architectures, as well as providing technical support and further development for junior engineers through design reviews and technical mentoring

Convince us with your qualifications
- Completed studies in electrical engineering, electronics, automation or control technology, mechatronics, robotics, physics, or a comparable course of study with a focus on PLC-based controls, Embedded Systems, or real-time systems
- More than 5 years of professional experience in the fields of plant control, factory automation, embedded software, or complex scientific experimental facilities with PLC-based components
- Very good knowledge of PLC programming with Structured Text (IEC 61131-3) as well as sound software engineering practices such as modularization, version control (e.g., Git), and unit testing
- Experience with SCADA systems (e.g., Ignition, EPICS, Tango, WinCC, FactoryTalk, AVEVA, etc.) as well as in the development of user-oriented HMIs with reliable alarm and error management
- Proficient in reading circuit diagrams and P&IDs (P&IDs) as well as in collaborating with electrical and mechanical engineering teams
- Knowledge of industrial networks and fieldbus systems such as EtherCAT, OPC UA, and Modbus TCP
- Familiar with risk assessment procedures and safety standards (e.g., ISA 84, IEC 61508)
- Strong-communication personality with very good English skills and the ability to moderate technical discussions in international, cross-location teams
- Practice-oriented engineer with demonstrable experience in hardware/software integration, as well as strong skills in error analysis and troubleshooting
