Associate Fire Engineer

Role Summary

We are looking for a Chartered Associate Fire Engineer to join F.I.R.E. Consultancy during a period of continued growth.

This is a senior technical and leadership role suited to an experienced fire engineering professional who can lead complex project work, manage and mentor engineers, support client relationships and contribute to business development.

You will take responsibility for producing fire safety strategies, fire risk assessments and bespoke fire engineering solutions, including first-principles assessments, performance-based designs, fire and evacuation modelling, risk analysis and cost benefit analysis where appropriate.

The role will involve site visits, technical delivery, mentoring, contribution to training programmes, fee proposals, work conversion, client retention and support with the recruitment and development of new talent.

You will need Chartered Engineer status, a BSc, MSc or PhD in an engineering or science subject, and at least 10 years’ relevant experience in fire engineering or a closely related technical field.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will provide technical leadership across complex fire engineering work, while supporting team development and contributing to business growth.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Producing clear, accurate and well-structured fire safety engineering reports.
• Supporting, mentoring and developing colleagues and junior staff.
• Reviewing design information, including drawings, specifications and technical documents.
• Ensuring work meets client expectations, contractual requirements and relevant technical standards.
• Resolving fire engineering challenges through accepted principles, codes, standards and professional judgement.
• Leading fee proposals, supporting work conversion, maintaining client relationships and contributing to talent acquisition.

Knowledge and skills

You will hold a BSc, MSc or PhD in a suitable engineering or science-related subject, with at least 10 years’ relevant experience in fire engineering or a closely related technical field.

Chartered Engineer status is essential, and registration with a relevant professional institution, such as the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), is expected.

You should also be able to demonstrate active engagement with the wider fire safety profession, such as involvement in professional bodies, technical groups or special interest groups.

You will bring relevant knowledge and practical experience across the following areas:

• Developing holistic fire safety strategies and performance-based designs, supported by fire and evacuation modelling, risk analysis and cost benefit analysis where appropriate.
• Applying fire engineering principles to the built environment.
• Providing fire safety advice within regulated industries, such as nuclear power generation.
• Managing fire safety on construction sites.
• Liaising with Fire and Rescue Services across private and public sector contexts.
• Communicating and presenting design solutions to a wide audience, including technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Applying appropriate UK legislation, regulations, national standards and international standards.
• Understanding insurer requirements and appropriate life safety and asset protection considerations.
• Working with fire water networks and fire water pumping systems, including fire water pumps, storage tanks and associated infrastructure.
• Working with water spray systems for applications including spheres, above-ground vessels, transformers, storage tanks, and flammable and combustible pumps.
• Using relevant analysis, design and specification software and techniques, including hydraulic calculations for water-based fire protection systems, sprinkler systems, water spray systems, fire pump sizing, fire water network analysis and foam systems.
• Managing and motivating teams of technical specialists to deliver project commitments to programme and cost.
• Applying an analytical and methodical approach to engineering problems.

You should be comfortable communicating with clients, colleagues and technical and non-technical stakeholders, and able to produce, review and approve clear, accurate and well-structured reports.

This role also requires confidence with relevant software, including Bluebeam, Microsoft Office, CAD and smoke modelling software. You will support project budgets, commercial delivery, and the mentoring and development of team members.

Travel is required for site visits, client meetings and project work, so a full UK driving licence is essential.

Location and regional expansion

F.I.R.E. Consultancy is headquartered in South Wales, but for the right person this role could be based anywhere in the UK.

This appointment could support our wider regional expansion, with you taking a lead role in developing our presence in your area, building client relationships, identifying opportunities and growing a team over time.
