Testing and Hardware Engineer
About the company
We are looking for a Testing and Hardware Engineer to join Elmery's growing technology team in Helsinki. This is a very hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys solving technical problems, working with hardware, and turning ideas into functional solutions.
Join Elmery and help transform technology development into practical and scalable solutions for more sustainable metal recovery.
Your tasks
In this role, you will design, build, use, and develop the hardware and testing arrangements used in the development of Elmery's technology. You will work closely with testing and experimental development and help transform technical needs and laboratory-scale concepts into practical, reliable, and repeatable solutions. The work combines mechanical engineering with aspects of electrical engineering, instrumentation, and automation.
Job Description This is not solely desk-based engineering work. One day you might be assembling hardware, another day investigating a technical problem, working with instrumentation or automation, participating in experimental testing, or handling routine maintenance and testing tasks. We value initiative, enthusiasm for practical doing, and the courage to tackle even previously unknown tasks.
- Comprehensive management of hardware from design, construction, and commissioning to maintenance and continuous development
- Developing experimental concepts into practical, resource-efficient, and scalable solutions using mechanical, electrical, and automation engineering as well as instrumentation
- Ensuring hardware reliability, usability, and suitability for its intended purpose through preventive and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, spare parts planning, and supplier cooperation
- Supporting laboratory and pilot-scale testing, including preparation, execution of experiments, and practical problem-solving
- Identifying hardware development targets and implementing improvements, as well as utilizing lessons learned and documenting technical changes and results
- Ensuring the safe and efficient use of hardware in collaboration with researchers, technicians, and the rest of the technology team
Requirements
The role is versatile and hands-on, and your tasks will vary according to the team's needs. We are looking for someone who bravely tackles both new technical challenges and everyday practical tasks and who has the desire to learn, adapt, and get things done.
If necessary, you will also participate in the execution of experimental activities and laboratory testing. Previous laboratory field training or expertise in demanding analytics is not required.
What we expect from you
- Relevant engineering or other technical education
- Practical experience in hardware development, prototype building, testing, maintenance, or other relevant technical tasks
- Broad technical understanding of mechanical and electrical engineering, instrumentation, and automation – you do not need to be a specialist in all fields
- Readiness to work with tools and hardware and to implement technical ideas in practice
- A desire to tackle new and previously unknown tasks and to adapt to changing needs
- A systematic approach to work as well as an understanding of hardware safety and risk assessment
- Good oral and written English skills; proficiency in Finnish is considered an advantage
- Readiness for international travel if necessary
We also value experience in industrial environments, machine design, control systems, process technology, or metallurgy. We do not expect you to master everything beforehand.
You will succeed in this role if you are
- Hands-on and proactive. You enjoy bringing ideas to life and are ready to take action and do it yourself.
- Versatile and curious. You are happy to take on various tasks, from new technical challenges to routine work, and you learn new things through doing.
- Solution-oriented and resource-conscious. You look for reliably working solutions without unnecessary complexity. You also consider the construction, maintenance, and repeatability of solutions.
- A team player. You work smoothly with experts from different fields and are ready to help wherever your expertise and contribution are needed.
What we offer
- The opportunity to participate in developing patented technology into world-class products for international markets
- A versatile engineering role where you get to take ideas from early experiments to functional technical solutions
- The opportunity to develop your expertise in hardware development, instrumentation, automation, and technology scaling
- Freedom and responsibility to solve real technical challenges and see the results of your own work
- A motivated and international team working to advance more sustainable metal recovery
