Technical Assistant (f/m/d) in Laser and Accelerator Laboratories for PETRA IV
Temporary: 2 years | Start: as soon as possible | ID: MMA033/2026 | Application deadline: 21.09.2026 | Full-time/Part-time
The Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY, with more than 2900 employees at the Hamburg and Zeuthen locations, is one of the world's leading research centers. At the heart of the research is the decoding of the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles in the universe to the building blocks of life. In doing so, DESY contributes to solving the great questions and pressing challenges of science, society, and economy. With state-of-the-art research infrastructure, interdisciplinary research platforms, and international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the scientific, technical, and administrative sectors, as well as for the training of highly qualified young talent.
An absolute highlight is the major project PETRA IV – one of the most ambitious and innovative research infrastructure projects worldwide. With PETRA IV, a next-generation synchrotron radiation source is being created that sets new standards in precision, performance, and scientific excellence. The associated construction and infrastructure measures are technically highly complex, internationally visible, and offer the unique opportunity to participate in a flagship project of global importance. This results in demanding challenges of both a scientific and technical nature. More information about PETRA IV can be found here: PETRA IV (https://cockpit.as-mediendesign.de/jump1/129162/1/1020)
Laser-plasma acceleration, a still young technology at DESY, allows particle accelerators to be built compactly. With a plasma-based injector for DESY's future X-ray microscope PETRA IV, DESY is performing pioneering work in the development and application of this technology. Large cleanroom laboratories and radiation-safe buildings are necessary for the operation of the required lasers and accelerators. For the operation of these laboratories and support in the planning and construction of new laboratory infrastructure, we are looking for a laboratory assistant. DESY offers a lively and inspiring working environment in a team of interdisciplinary, international experts with great potential for professional development.
Where we need your support:
- General laboratory organization, operation, and support of technical groups and service providers
- Implementation of administrative processes for the procurement of laboratory equipment and services
- Maintenance and servicing of devices and systems in laser and cleanroom laboratories distributed across the DESY campus
- Calibration and adjustment of laboratory measuring instruments
- Warehousing and ordering of consumables and cleanroom components
What distinguishes you:
- Completed training as a technical assistant with state recognition or equivalent skills and experience
- Practical laboratory experience and knowledge of working in a cleanroom
- Specialist knowledge in the operation and maintenance of technical measuring instruments
- Independent way of working as well as willingness to work in a team
- Knowledge of using Microsoft Office and confident communication in English
What distinguishes us:
Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. We attach great importance to appreciative cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees. Equality for all people is an important concern for us. To better combine professional and private life, DESY offers flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models, and participation in mobile work (up to 50%). You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management, and our company pension scheme. As a publicly funded employer, we offer you a secure job and support your individual development with our extensive training and further education offers. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV‑AVH. DESY offers its employees at both locations an employer subsidy for the Jobticket (Deutschland-Ticket).
