Fixed-term: initially 2 years with option for permanent employment | Start: 01.10.2026 | ID: FSMA038/2026 | Application deadline: 07.09.2026 | Full-time/Part-time | Mobile work possible

The Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY, with more than 2900 employees at the Hamburg and Zeuthen locations, is one of the world's leading research centers. At the heart of the research is the decoding of the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles in the universe to the building blocks of life. In doing so, DESY contributes to solving the great questions and pressing challenges of science, society, and economy. With state-of-the-art research infrastructure, interdisciplinarily designed research platforms, and international networks, DESY possesses a highly attractive working environment in the scientific, technical, and administrative sectors, as well as for the training of highly qualified young talent.

DESY's PETRA IV project creates unique experimental possibilities for scientists worldwide with its 3D X-ray microscope. As a next-generation synchrotron radiation source, PETRA IV sets new standards in precision, performance, and scientific excellence. To develop and optimize the mechatronic instruments, we are looking for an engineer in the fields of Mechatronics, Automation Technology, Physical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent qualifications) at the earliest possible date. In an interdisciplinary team, you will work on the development of new concepts for ultra-precision mechanics as well as the construction of prototypes of mechatronic systems for the high-precision positioning of mechanical components. More information about PETRA IV can be found here: PETRA IV (https://cockpit.as-mediendesign.de/jump1/129505/1/1020) .

What we need your support for:

  • Developing concepts and systems for the highly dynamic positioning of samples and beamline components
  • Introducing and application-specific integration of new technologies in close cooperation with industrial partners
  • Development and commissioning of complex mechanical and electromechanical research apparatus in a team with scientists and engineers
  • Construction, specification, and optimization of high-precision measuring apparatus
  • Development of control and regulation algorithms for position control
  • Supervision, maintenance, and optimization of the installed apparatus

What distinguishes you:

  • Completed technical university education in the field of Mechatronics, Automation Technology, Physical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent specialist knowledge, skills, and experience
  • Sound knowledge in the design and operation of mechatronic systems, as well as in control technology, electronics, and measurement technology, including hardware-near programming
  • Precision and dexterity when working with sensitive measuring equipment, as well as orderly documentation of work
  • Teamwork skills and a confident appearance when dealing with industrial partners and measurement guests
  • Good written and spoken English skills (B1 or higher)

What distinguishes us:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. We attach great importance to appreciative cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees.
