This position is located in the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, Public Office Division. The Public Office division receives incoming documents, dockets filing and pleadings; maintaining official case files; answering public inquiries; providing internal mail service; and supporting courtroom operations. The Public Office is under the authority of the Clerk of the Court.

Major duties

Brief Description of Duties: Processes all newly filed notices of appeal, petitions for review of agency decisions, special writs, writs of mandamus, applications for allowance of appeals, and bar governance matters. Dockets all relevant information, setting and assigning case tickets. Proofreads all elements of each new appeal and consults with the supervisor as needed. Identifies discrepancies in case records and refers complex issues to the supervisor. Processes and maintains assigned case files using established court procedures. Reviews legal findings for completeness and procedural compliance. Ensures all submissions are properly coded and are in compliance with court rules, and dockets or rejects submissions in line with Public Office procedures. Engages and communicates with parties regarding non-compliant submissions and recommends appropriate actions for resolution. Coordinates with Court of Appeals and Superior Court staff to secure inmate information from the applicable D.C. or Federal systems. Maintains and distributes informational materials and updates litigant, entity, and attorney data as needed. Provides in-person office coverage on a rotating schedule.

Qualifications

Required Education & Experience A minimum of a high school diploma or GED plus four (4) years of administrative experience in a high-volume office environment or an associate's degree plus two (2) years of administrative experience in a high-volume office environment. If qualifying based on education higher than a high school diploma, the candidate must provide a copy of their college transcript or degree. The incumbent should be an enthusiastic and engaged professional who enjoys working with a diverse group of Court personnel and customers and lives the DC Courts' values of Accountability, Excellence, Fairness, Integrity, Respect, and Transparency.

Education

At a minimum, candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED. You must upload a copy of your college transcript or degree for consideration. The transcript must show the name of the college or university, your name, degree conferred date, a list of courses with credit hours, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Foreign Education: If you are using foreign education to meet qualification requirements, you must upload a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with your transcript at the time of application to receive credit for that education.
