Engineering Technician, Robot Systems
Dexmate is building the foundation for physical AI — combining a new generation of robots with a universal Physical AI OS, making robots as easy to build and deploy as software. Today, robotics is fragmented, slow, and closed: most builders are forced to reinvent the same stack again and again, and most ideas never make it past the prototype stage. We exist to change that. Our mission is to democratize robotics by lowering the barrier to entry, delivering a plug-and-play platform for developers, researchers, and enterprises, and cultivating an open ecosystem that accelerates the evolution of physical AI. If you want to help shape the next layer of human capability — and believe the future of robotics should be built together, not in isolation — we'd love to build it with you.
THE ROLE
We're looking for hands-on Engineering Technicians to keep our robots built, tested, and running. You'll work out of our Fremont facility on various robot platforms. You'll bring up new units, run them through test, maintain the internal fleet our engineers depend on every day, and get pulled into the field when a customer needs an extra set of hands.
This role sits between engineering and the robot. Engineers will rely on you to turn a test plan into real data, a failure into a root cause, and a pile of parts into a working system. You will also have real input into how we test and maintain robots as we scale from prototypes to production.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- System Build & Bring-Up: Assemble, integrate, and bring up robots, subsystems (arms, hands, actuators, mobile bases, compute), and test fixtures from engineering drawings, BOMs, and work instructions. Flash firmware, configure software, and verify units against spec before they go to an internal team or a customer.
- Test & Validation: Execute component-, subsystem-, and system-level tests, including functional, performance, endurance/life, and environmental (thermal, humidity, ingress, vibration) testing. Set up rigs, collect clean data, and adapt procedures when specs are still evolving.
- Test Development & Automation: Help write and improve test procedures. Build and maintain test fixtures and stations, and script repetitive tests and data capture (Python/bash) so they run consistently.
- Fleet Maintenance: Own preventive maintenance and inspection for our internal robot fleet, which runs research, data collection, and demos. Track wear and failure trends, and keep downtime low.
- Troubleshooting & Failure Analysis: Diagnose electrical, mechanical, and system-level faults using multimeters, oscilloscopes, current probes, logs, and telemetry. Isolate root cause, perform repairs and rework, and write up findings engineers can act on.
- Field Support: Travel occasionally (~10–20%) to customer and partner sites to support installs, repairs, and debugging, working alongside our Hardware Support team.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of builds, test results, repairs, and configuration per serial number. Turn what you learn into runbooks and troubleshooting guides.
- Engineering Feedback Loop: Flag recurring failures, assembly pain points, and design-for-test or design-for-service improvements to the mechanical, electrical, and firmware teams.
- Lab & Safety: Keep test areas, tools, and equipment organized and calibrated. Follow ESD, lithium-ion battery, and robot motion-safety practices, and help set those standards.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- 2+ years of hands-on experience building, testing, maintaining, or repairing complex electromechanical systems, such as robotics, automation, automotive/EV, aerospace, medical devices, or consumer hardware.
- Strong electrical and mechanical fundamentals: you can read schematics, wiring diagrams, and mechanical drawings, and you're comfortable with crimping, soldering, harness work, and torque-controlled assembly.
- Fluency with diagnostic tools: DMM, oscilloscope, power supplies, current probes.
- Comfort on a Linux command line: SSH into a robot, read logs, run scripts, flash and update software.
- Methodical approach to testing and data. You follow procedures precisely, notice when something looks off, and record what happened accurately.
- Clear written and verbal communication with engineers and, when in the field, with customers.
- Associate's or bachelor's degree in an engineering or technical field, military technical training, or equivalent hands-on experience. We weigh track record over credentials.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and travel occasionally.
BONUS POINTS
- Experience with humanoid, legged, or mobile manipulation robots, or multi-actuator systems.
- Familiarity with ROS 2, EtherCAT, CAN, or NVIDIA Jetson platforms.
- Python scripting for test automation or data analysis.
- Experience with environmental, reliability, or life testing.
- IPC-A-610 / IPC-A-620 / J-STD-001 certification.
