Senior VxWorks / DO-178C Developer

Number of positions: 4 Location: Remote – UK based Contract: Inside IR35 Duration: ASAP – September 2027 Pay rate: £474 per day, inclusive of holiday pay Umbrella equivalent: £550 per day

CPL is supporting a client with the appointment of four experienced Senior VxWorks / DO-178C Developers for a long-term embedded software engineering programme. We are looking for senior engineers with strong safety-critical embedded development experience and, critically, proven DO-178C certification experience.

Key Responsibilities

Design, implement and validate embedded software, including Board Support Packages (BSPs), for custom and COTS embedded hardware systems. Design, implement and test software drivers for peripheral devices used within embedded hardware environments. Develop hardware test code and support the bring-up and validation of custom embedded hardware. Produce detailed technical and software design documentation. Support technical planning, including statements of work, effort estimation and identification of required engineering skills. Troubleshoot complex technical issues across embedded software and hardware environments. Work independently while collaborating with project managers, engineers and wider technical teams. Provide technical mentoring and support to more junior engineers where required.

Essential Skills & Experience

DO-178C certification experience is mandatory. Minimum 7 years’ software development experience, including at least 5 years working with DO-178C development. Deep understanding of DO-178C standards, particularly DAL A certification. Strong experience of requirements-based testing, verification and validation, and structural coverage. Experience developing safety-critical and/or avionics software. Strong C programming skills. Experience with low-level embedded software development, including BSPs and device drivers. Experience with embedded development environments such as Workbench or Eclipse. Experience with custom embedded hardware bring-up. Development experience across embedded processor architectures such as PowerPC, MIPS, x86 and ARM. Familiarity with tools such as DOORS, Polarion and Jira, or equivalent. Strong communication, problem-solving and stakeholder-facing skills.

Desirable: Experience with multi-core and virtualisation architectures, Simics and/or certification-focused environments.
