Multi Skilled Engineer
An established, forward-thinking manufacturing organisation based in Shropshire is expanding its engineering operations to keep pace with sustained commercial demand. With a modern production facility operating high-speed automated equipment, the site combines traditional manufacturing values with progressive engineering techniques to supply critical products across the UK.
In this environment, the engineering team sits right at the heart of operational success. As a Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer, your expertise directly influences line efficiency, reduces costly plant downtime, and ensures safety standards are rigorously upheld. Your work is not simply about fixing breakdowns; it is about optimising performance, refining preventative schedules, and embedding a culture of engineering excellence across the facility.
Based in the historic county town of Shropshire, the facility offers an exceptional working environment surrounded by the scenic Shropshire countryside. Shropshire blends medieval heritage, independent culture, and excellent transport links across the West Midlands and into Wales, making it an attractive, vibrant base for engineering professionals looking to build a balanced lifestyle alongside a rewarding career.
Location: Shropshire
Salary: £40,000 – £44,000 per year
Employment: Permanent
The Role
Joining a collaborative engineering department, you will deliver comprehensive engineering support across high-volume production machinery, automated systems, and building services.
- Carrying out proactive planned preventative maintenance schedules across all mechanical and electrical plant.
- Responding promptly to reactive breakdown calls to diagnose faults, minimise machine downtime, and restore production safely.
- Conducting systematic electrical fault-finding using diagnostic tools, schematics, and testing equipment across three-phase motors, drives, and control panels.
- Diagnosing and repairing mechanical issues across gearboxes, pumps, pneumatics, hydraulics, conveyor systems, and packaging lines.
- Interrogating programmable logic controllers to identify system faults, adjust parameters, and support process automation.
- Identifying root causes of recurring machinery failures and implementing robust, permanent engineering solutions.
- Collaborating with production supervisors and operators to coordinate scheduled maintenance work without disrupting critical delivery schedules.
- Contributing actively to continuous improvement projects, plant modifications, and energy-reduction initiatives across the site.
- Maintaining meticulous, accurate maintenance records, asset histories, and statutory compliance documentation within the computerised maintenance management system.
About You
- A recognised engineering qualification such as an NVQ Level 3, City and Guilds, or ONC/HNC in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering is essential.
- Proven multi-skilled engineering experience gained within a high-speed manufacturing, packaging, or industrial production environment.
- Strong electrical competence with the ability to interpret technical wiring diagrams and troubleshoot control circuits safely.
- Solid mechanical knowledge covering power transmission, pneumatic systems, hydraulics, and mechanical drive assemblies.
- Basic diagnostic experience with programmable logic controllers, sensors, and variable speed drives (desirable).
- A structured and analytical approach to problem-solving, with the tenacity to track down complex intermittent faults.
- Familiarity with workplace health and safety legislation, risk assessments, permit-to-work procedures, and safe isolation protocols.
- Flexibility to work the site shift pattern and support occasional planned shutdown work or cover where needed.
A Typical Day
Starting your shift with a handover from the outgoing engineering team, you will review the shift logs, check operational priorities, and coordinate with the production team on any ongoing mechanical or electrical issues. Your morning might involve executing a planned preventative maintenance overhaul on a critical packaging conveyor, inspecting bearings and calibrating sensors, before responding to an urgent breakdown on a primary processing line. After resolving the issue safely, you will document your findings, restock any components used from the stores, and spend the afternoon collaborating with the engineering manager on an automated equipment upgrade project designed to boost overall plant output.
What You Can Expect
- A permanent role with a growing, ambitious Shropshire organisation dedicated to long-term stability and sustainable growth.
- 28 days annual leave including bank holidays.
- Dedicated personal development plans with structured training covering advanced automation, PLC diagnostics, and statutory compliance.
- A clear route to progress into senior maintenance engineer, lead specialist, or maintenance supervisory roles.
- A modern, well-invested working environment equipped with high-standard tooling, dedicated workshops, and genuine team support.
- A workplace culture that actively values engineering input and encourages continuous professional growth.
- Workplace pension scheme with company contributions to help secure your future.
