Join the power movement as an Environmental Health & Safety Technician

The Environmental Health & Safety Technician plays a dynamic, hands-on role in supporting the Devens-campus EHS team and driving day-to-day operational excellence across the campus. This position conducts continuous field process confirmations, routine building inspections, equipment verifications, and swift corrective action resolution across multiple campus facilities. Additionally, this role provides flexible operational support across environmental programs, leading or assisting with compliance tasks as operational needs evolve.

What you'll do: Field Inspections, Corrective Actions & General EHS

Conduct frequent floor walks and field process confirmations across campus buildings to verify safe work practices and operating conditions

Facilitate regular safety audits and inspections on walking-working surfaces, ladders, tools, and operational areas using standardized checklists

Identify workplace hazards and unsafe conditions immediately, initiating prompt corrective actions and ensuring timely follow-up to closure

Respond flexibly to ad-hoc EHS requests, urgent floor issues, special projects, and dynamic campus needs

Assist EHS Specialists with incident, injury, and near-miss investigations, including root cause analysis and preventative action tracking

Support industrial hygiene monitoring and employee exposure assessments across facilities

Help roll out and maintain site-specific safety programs, safe work practices, and job hazard analyses (JHAs).

Safety & Emergency Equipment Management

Inspect, test, and coordinate routine servicing for campus life safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, fall protection gear, first aid kits, AEDs, safety showers, and eyewash stations

Verify that lifting and rigging equipment across all areas is inspected and maintained per regulations and manufacturer standards

Calibrate and maintain fixed and portable gas detection equipment according to scheduled intervals.

Environmental Program Support & Compliance

Perform weekly inspections of hazardous material and hazardous waste storage areas, including satellite accumulation areas across buildings and central storage sites

Ensure all waste streams (hazardous, universal, waste oil, and recyclables) are properly labeled, segregated, and stored

Maintain accurate compliance logs, including waste drum logs, sign-in sheets, and VOC/solvent usage tracking

Conduct weekly campus stormwater inspections in accordance with the SWPPP

Assist waste disposal contractors during waste staging, loading, and shipment processes

Perform spill prevention tasks, maintain campus spill response kits, and assist with implementing the SPCC plan

Assist with internal environmental compliance assessments and due diligence reviews

What we’re looking for: High school diploma or equivalency certificate

6+ years of experience implementing and overseeing aspects related to an environmental, health and safety program

Previous experience in a construction/industrial environment

Ability to work in a high-volume, fast paced environment

Required experience in performing safety oversight in an industrial environment

Requirement of knowledge of regulatory requirements from agencies like OSHA, EPA, DEC, RCRA, and others

Bonus points for: Experience in managing hazardous waste storage and satellite accumulation areas

Experience implementing/developing health and safety plans and programs

Experience with emergency response incidents involving hazardous and non-hazardous material releases to air, soil, and water

Demonstrated strong propensity for hands-on work and attention to detail in either academic or career pursuits

Ability to multitask, to manage shifting priorities and to follow through on projects with minimal supervision

Strong organizational and communication skills

Must-have requirements: Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs

Perform activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time

Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics

Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call
