Your tasks

About the Role We are looking for an experienced, reliable and motivated HGV Fitter / HGV Technician to join our busy waste management operation.

The successful candidate will be responsible for servicing, maintaining, diagnosing and repairing our fleet of heavy goods vehicles, including refuse collection vehicles, skip lorries, roll-on roll-off vehicles and other specialist waste collection equipment.

This is an important role within our business, ensuring our vehicles remain safe, roadworthy and operational, minimising downtime and supporting the efficient delivery of our daily waste collection services.

  • Carry out routine servicing, maintenance and repairs on HGVs and commercial vehicles.
  • Diagnose and rectify mechanical, electrical and pneumatic faults.
  • Conduct planned preventative maintenance inspections (PMIs) in accordance with DVSA standards and company maintenance schedules.
  • Prepare vehicles for MOT inspections and ensure compliance with roadworthiness requirements.
  • Identify and resolve faults quickly and efficiently to minimise vehicle downtime.
  • Carry out repairs to braking systems, suspension, steering, engines, gearboxes and transmissions.
  • Inspect and maintain specialist waste collection equipment, including refuse bodies, compactors, bin lifts and associated mechanisms.
  • Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems where experience permits.
  • Respond to vehicle breakdowns and provide technical support when required.
  • Maintain accurate servicing, inspection and repair records.
  • Identify recurring vehicle defects and recommend preventative measures.
  • Ensure workshop equipment and tools are maintained in a safe and serviceable condition.
  • Work closely with the Transport and Operations teams to prioritise repairs and maximise vehicle availability.
  • Comply with all relevant Health & Safety procedures and company policies.

Requirements

We are looking for someone who takes pride in their workmanship, can work independently and has a proactive approach to vehicle maintenance and fault diagnosis.

  • Previous experience working as an HGV Fitter, HGV Mechanic or HGV Technician.
  • Strong mechanical knowledge of commercial vehicles.
  • Experience in vehicle servicing, maintenance, fault diagnosis and repairs.
  • Good understanding of HGV braking, suspension and electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of DVSA inspection requirements and vehicle roadworthiness standards.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve mechanical faults without constant supervision.
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Reliable, flexible and capable of working under pressure.
  • A proactive attitude towards preventative maintenance and vehicle reliability.

Desirable Skills – An Advantage, Not Essential

  • Experience working with hydraulic systems, particularly those fitted to refuse collection vehicles, compactors, skip loaders and roll-on roll-off vehicles.
  • Experience maintaining refuse collection vehicles and specialist waste management equipment.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic pumps, cylinders, valves, hoses and associated control systems.
  • Experience with vehicle diagnostic equipment.
  • NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds or equivalent qualification in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance.
  • HGV Class 1 or Class 2 driving licence.
  • Welding and fabrication experience.

Hydraulics experience would be a distinct advantage; however, this is not essential, and we welcome applications from experienced HGV Fitters looking to develop their skills in specialist waste collection equipment.

What we offer

  • Competitive salary of £48,000–£55,000 depending on experience.
  • Permanent, full-time employment.
  • Overtime opportunities.
