We’re seeking a highly skilled, detail-oriented and technically driven CNC Programmer II to join our growing Machine Shop team. As a CNC Programmer II, you will plan CNC programs and support machining operations for precision metal parts on automatic machine tools while also assisting the Production Supervisor with day-to-day team direction. You will develop, prove out and optimize CNC programs for multi-axis machining centers and traditional manufacturing methods, ensuring parts meet established quality and performance specifications. This role combines hands-on CNC programming and machining expertise with opportunities to provide technical guidance, support employee development and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Your tasks will include analyzing engineering drawings, sketches and 3D models to determine machining requirements, developing and optimizing CNC programs, selecting appropriate tooling and setup requirements, and creating detailed process and setup documentation. You will conduct program prove-outs and trial runs, inspect finished parts, troubleshoot programming issues and optimize processes to improve efficiency and reduce cycle times. You will also maintain the master CNC program directory, assist with the development of jigs, fixtures and special equipment, and coordinate programming activities while providing technical guidance to CNC Programmers and Junior CNC Programmers. In addition, you will support CNC machine operations, training and cross-training, quality initiatives, equipment maintenance and long-range manufacturing projects.

Main responsibilities would be Analyze engineering drawings, sketches and 3D models to determine machining dimensions, configurations, cutting tools, speeds, feeds and machining processes.

Develop and optimize CNC programs for multi-axis machining centers ranging from 2–9 axes and traditional manufacturing methods using PartMaker software for Okuma OSP, Mazak VCN and Mitsubishi Wire EDM.

Select and specify tooling, cutter assemblies, backup programs, tool lists and setup requirements for CNC operations.

Develop detailed shop process and setup sheets, instruction sheets and cutter assembly drawings to support machine setup and operation.

Conduct CNC program prove-outs and trial runs, verify finished parts against specifications and make necessary program corrections.

Optimize CNC programs following initial production runs to improve machining efficiency, reduce cycle times and identify cost-saving opportunities.

Maintain and manage the master CNC program directory, ensuring proper file management, program accuracy, validity and accessibility.

Assist in the design and development of jigs, tools, fixtures and special equipment for CNC applications and manufacturing processes.

Coordinate and assign programming activities to CNC Programmers and Junior CNC Programmers while providing technical guidance and debugging support.

Plan and organize special projects and long-range manufacturing initiatives.

Set up and operate various CNC machines while performing required inspection and gauging to ensure parts meet established quality standards and specifications.

Identify and recommend improvements to production methods, equipment performance and product quality to support efficiency and continuous improvement.

Provide training, promote cross-training, support employee development and reinforce strong performance to encourage engagement and teamwork.

Clean machines, tooling and parts and perform machine maintenance as required.

Qualify measuring tools on a daily basis.

Maintain appropriate records and documentation.

Adhere to Bluefors quality and safety standards for all equipment, supplies and products.

Perform other duties as assigned.

What we expect from you High school diploma/GED and completion of an Apprenticeship Program; or an associate’s degree plus four or more years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience with PartMaker software and CNC programming for lathes and mills.

Ability to read, interpret and apply engineering drawings, CNC program documentation, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and training documents.

Strong understanding of G&M codes, manually written coded programs, conversational programming and CAD/CAM software, including PartMaker.

Ability to develop and troubleshoot CNC programs for multi-axis machining operations.

Strong mathematical, analytical and critical-thinking skills with the ability to evaluate information, identify alternatives and implement effective solutions.

Ability to monitor machine operation using gauges, dials and other indicators to ensure equipment is operating properly and parts meet established requirements.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide clear instructions, training and technical guidance to others.

Sound judgment and decision-making skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage workload effectively.

Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety.

We also appreciate Experience working with Okuma OSP, Mazak VCN and Mitsubishi Wire EDM equipment.

Experience developing and optimizing programs for multi-axis CNC machining centers.

Experience designing or developing jigs, fixtures, tooling and special equipment.

Experience providing technical guidance, training or mentoring to CNC Programmers or other manufacturing employees.

Experience supporting continuous improvement initiatives focused on machining efficiency, cycle time reduction, cost savings or product quality.

Experience participating in special projects or long-range manufacturing initiatives.

Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, reach with arms and hands, and use hand and finger dexterity. The employee is occasionally required to walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and talk and hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment This position operates in a manufacturing environment and interacts with internal customers in a professional, courteous and cooperative manner. Required PPE must be worn as applicable. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and may occasionally be exposed to humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, heat, cold, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud.
