Principal Engineer (Power Systems)

The Principal Power Systems Engineer will provide technical and project leadership for complex Power Systems projects across Singapore and the APAC region. The role combines hands-on engineering delivery with project leadership and client engagement responsibilities. Working closely with regional and global teams, the individual will play a key role in developing Black & White Engineering's Power Systems capability while delivering high-quality solutions for mission critical and data centre infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
- Act as technical lead for major Power Systems projects, work packages or defined areas of technical responsibility.
- Establish the engineering approach, design basis and technical execution strategy.
- Lead development of HV/MV system architecture and major technical decisions.
- Direct and integrate engineering across:
- primary systems;
- secondary systems;
- protection and control;
- power system studies;
- SCADA and automation;
- auxiliary systems;
- earthing and lightning protection; and
- relevant utility and multidisciplinary interfaces.
- Resolve significant technical issues and determine when specialist or higher-level technical authority is required.
- Review and approve engineering deliverables within delegated authority.
- Provide technical assurance that Power Systems outputs are coordinated, complete and suitable for their intended purpose.
Project Delivery
- Lead the Power Systems engineering team for assigned projects.
- Define activities, responsibilities, deliverables and resource requirements.
- Allocate and coordinate work across Engineers and Senior Engineers.
- Establish realistic engineering programmes and monitor performance against them.
- Maintain oversight of scope, budget, resource expenditure and programme.
- Identify and manage technical, programme and commercial risks.
- Ensure changes to agreed scope are identified and appropriately managed.
- Provide reliable resource and workload forecasts.
Quality and Governance
- Ensure application of Power Systems methodologies, standards, procedures and technical governance requirements.
- Lead significant technical reviews and design workshops.
- Ensure appropriate checking and approval arrangements are established for project deliverables.
- Capture lessons learned and drive improvements in engineering quality and consistency.
- Escalate material technical and delivery risks appropriately.
People and Capability
- Provide technical and delivery leadership to Engineers and Senior Engineers.
- Mentor and develop team members and support progression towards increased technical responsibility.
- Contribute to recruitment and technical assessment of candidates.
- Support development of methodologies, standards, templates and technical guidance.
- Develop and/or support specialist capability where appropriate.
- Promote knowledge sharing across the global Power Systems function.
Clients and Commercial Performance
- Act as a senior Power Systems representative in client, utility, contractor and vendor engagements.
- Build trusted technical relationships with key stakeholders.
- Lead or materially contribute to definition of Power Systems scopes, fee estimates and technical proposals.
- Ensure proposed scope, resources, deliverables and programme are technically and commercially credible.
- Identify additional scope and opportunities arising through project delivery.
- Support Associate Directors and the Director in client development and pursuit of new work.
Professional and Technical Expertise
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent relevant qualification.
- Chartered Engineer status or equivalent professional standing normally expected.
- Extensive experience in HV/MV Power Systems engineering and delivery of significant projects.
- Demonstrable ability to lead engineering from concept definition through detailed design and project implementation.
- Broad technical understanding across HV/MV system architecture, primary systems, secondary systems and power system analysis.
- Strong competence in power system modelling and the application and interpretation of engineering studies.
- Ability to make and defend significant engineering decisions based on technical requirements, risk and project constraints.
- Strong understanding of applicable international standards, utility requirements and industry practice.
- Ability to integrate specialist technical inputs into a coherent overall Power Systems design.
- Strong understanding of project scope, programme, resources and commercial performance.
- Proven ability to lead, develop and coordinate engineering teams.
- Strong client-facing, communication, negotiation and technical leadership skills.
