Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era of micromanufacturing with its Matter Compiler™ technology platform. This platform enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by providing manufacturing processes and a materials library that are inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. It unlocks MEMS manufacturing not only for device classes that could never be produced by semiconductor methods, but also for entirely new categories. Furthermore, this digital platform is fully programmable in the way 3D printing is digital—but whereas 3D printing produces parts of a single material using a single process, the Matter Compiler™ technology platform is a multi-process, multi-material system: bits and raw materials go in, and complete, functional micromachines come out. The Atomic Machines team has also created an exciting first device—made possible only through the Matter Compiler™ technology platform—that we will be unveiling to the world soon.

About the Role

We are seeking a UI Engineer to join our AI and Modeling & Simulation organization within the Data Engineering and Analytics team.

In this role, you will help own, maintain, and extend a suite of internally developed applications supporting manufacturing and engineering workflows. These include web-based tools for visually defining manufacturing processes, exploring metrology and telemetry data, and labeling and annotating data for AI/ML workflows. The applications provide highly interactive interfaces for working with materials, process steps, equipment, and engineering data, while maintaining consistency through well-defined data models and strict data contracts.

This is not a traditional front-end role. The UI represents complex manufacturing processes, so usability, data integrity, deterministic behavior, and technical precision all matter. You will work closely with Data, AI, Process, Design, and Software engineers to translate complex domain requirements into intuitive, reliable tools for real users.

Our offices are in Emeryville and Santa Clara, California.

What You’ll Do

Take ownership of internal applications front end development, initially focusing on maintenance, stabilization, and understanding the domain

Build and maintain a complex, stateful React + TypeScript application for a visual graph editor

Work from first principles to understand the underlying problem, user workflow, and data constraints before determining the right implementation

Partner closely with AI researchers, process engineers, chemists, device engineers, designers, and software engineers to translate complex requirements into practical UI solutions

Own small-to-medium features end-to-end, including UI, state changes, validation, testing, documentation, and release

Triage issues reported by manufacturing and process engineers, reproduce problems quickly, identify root causes, and implement safe, durable fixes

Maintain strict data contracts and deterministic behavior across validation, state management, and exports

Add and maintain unit tests using Jest and TypeScript

Communicate technical decisions and tradeoffs clearly through thoughtful PRs, strong commit hygiene, and precise documentation

Improve the maintainability, reliability, and performance of the front end as the product and its users evolve

Tools and technologies you’ll work with: React 18, TypeScript, Vite, Tailwind CSS, ReactFlow, AJV (JSON Schema), Jest, ESLint, GitLab API, OpenAPI, and Okta.

What You’ll Need

3-10 years of experience building software for industrial, robotics, manufacturing, scientific, or similarly complex technical environments

Strong experience building complex, stateful UI systems using React and TypeScript

Experience with graph or diagram editors, visual workflow builders, or similarly interaction-heavy applications

Experience solving complex, ambiguous technical problems across cross-functional teams with multiple stakeholders

Strong understanding of front-end state management, application architecture, and performance optimization

Experience working with validation systems, schemas, data contracts, and deterministic outputs

Strong debugging skills and the ability to identify root causes across complex systems

Ability to reason from first principles rather than defaulting to established patterns or previous solutions

Ability to translate the needs of highly technical users from different disciplines into clear product and engineering decisions

A rigorous and precise communication style, particularly when describing implementation details, constraints, and technical tradeoffs

Comfort taking ownership of an existing codebase, including maintenance and stabilization work, rather than focusing exclusively on greenfield development

CS degree preferred; other technical degrees considered

Bonus Points For

Direct experience with manufacturing systems, including MES, process planning, or manufacturing concepts such as recipes, methods, and catalogs

Experience with UX/UI design principles and a strong product/design sense

The compensation for this position also includes equity and benefits.
