Mobile Software Engineer (Internship, Unpaid)
Mobile Software Engineer Intern Mid Level | Copenhagen | Start ASAP or by agreement About athme athme is building a category-defining app for real-world sports and social connection. Our platform makes it easy to discover activities, join games, and build communities through movement. We are creating a product with the potential to change how people connect, stay active, and build meaningful relationships through sport. The Role We are looking for a Mobile Software Engineer to join us for an unpaid internship and work on the athme app, used by people across our cities to find and join sports activities. This is a React Native-centric role. Most of your time will go into building and improving features in our mobile app. From time to time, when a feature really needs it, you will also make changes in our Node.js backend, so a working knowledge of backend development is required. You will work directly with our CTO and ship to real users from the start. Duration and weekly hours are by agreement. What You Will Do Build and ship new features in the athme mobile app using React Native and Expo
Prototype new ideas quickly, building on our existing design work, to test and improve the product experience
Turn designs into polished, accessible screens and interactions
Improve performance, stability, and responsiveness across iOS and Android
Integrate the app with our APIs and handle state, caching, and offline behaviour
Make occasional backend changes in Node.js and MongoDB when a mobile feature depends on them
Work with design and product to refine features based on user feedback
What We Are Looking For Mid-level mobile experience, with apps you have shipped and can show us
Strong hands-on skills in React Native and JavaScript
A solid understanding of mobile architecture, navigation, state management, and API integration
Working knowledge of backend development, ideally Node.js and MongoDB, enough to extend an endpoint or data model when needed
Strong product and design sensibility, with attention to detail in UI and how the app feels to use
Comfortable using AI-assisted development tools in your daily workflow, and curious about how AI can improve the product
The ability to work independently and take a feature from idea to release
What We Offer Real ownership: your work ships to real users, not a sandbox
Close collaboration with the CTO and direct influence on the mobile product
Flexible hours and duration, agreed around your studies or other commitments
Remote flexibility with regular in-person collaboration in Copenhagen
Free access to athme events and regular team-building
Please note that this is an unpaid internship and does not include equity
Who Will Do Well Here This role suits someone who already builds mobile apps well and wants hands-on responsibility in a live product with an active community. You take initiative, care about design and quality, embrace AI tools as part of how you work, and enjoy seeing your work in people's hands quickly. Equal Opportunity athme is an equal opportunity employer. We make hiring decisions based on merit, capability, performance, and business needs, and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
