£35,000 - £42,000 Base + Benefits

Our client is looking for a Junior Developer to join their engineering team. This is an opportunity for a developer with around one year of commercial software development experience who wants to develop beyond simply completing assigned tickets and gain a broader understanding of how software products are designed, built, tested and improved.

You'll work closely with experienced engineers and gain exposure to the full development lifecycle. That means understanding the problem behind a piece of work, contributing to solutions, building software, testing it thoroughly and seeing it through to release.

You'll also have the opportunity to understand how the software is used by customers and why particular features and improvements matter. Over time, you'll be encouraged to contribute your own ideas, ask questions and develop the confidence to make sound technical decisions.

AI is increasingly becoming part of modern software development, and you'll be encouraged to make effective use of tools such as Claude and other AI-assisted development technologies. The emphasis isn't simply on producing code quickly, but on understanding, reviewing and taking responsibility for the quality of the resulting solution.

As part of a relatively small engineering team, your contribution will be visible, and you'll have the opportunity to work across different areas of the product. You'll be supported by more experienced engineers while gradually taking on greater responsibility as your skills develop.

The Role:

This is a genuine junior development position designed for someone at the early stage of their commercial career.

You won't be expected to arrive with all the answers. Instead, we're looking for someone who is keen to learn, asks questions, takes ownership of their work and wants to understand the wider purpose behind what they're building.

Initially, you'll work within established processes and alongside more experienced developers. As your knowledge and confidence grow, you'll be given increasing opportunities to contribute to technical decisions, customer-focused discussions, testing, improvements and new ideas.

A particularly important part of the role will be developing a strong approach to software quality. You'll be expected to test your own work thoroughly, understand potential edge cases and work with the wider team to ensure that what reaches customers is reliable.

You'll also gain exposure to the customer and commercial side of product development. This means developing an understanding of who uses the platform, the problems they're trying to solve and how the software you're working on helps them.

What You'll Be Doing:

Software Development

• Develop and deliver software features from initial requirements through to release.
• Work with the wider team to understand the problem before deciding how best to solve it.
• Use AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity while remaining accountable for the code and solutions produced.
• Work towards delivering development tasks within agreed timescales.
• Take ownership of your assigned work and communicate early when you encounter challenges or need additional support.
• Contribute to improving the speed and efficiency of the development process.

Technical Development

• Build an understanding of how different parts of the application work together.
• Develop your knowledge of software architecture, data structures, integrations and system behaviour.
• Make appropriate technical decisions within your level of experience and seek guidance when decisions have wider implications.
• Consider how changes may affect other parts of the platform.
• Identify potential technical risks and raise them with more experienced members of the team.
• Be willing to question an approach when you believe there may be a better solution.

What’s Required:

We're particularly interested in someone who has approximately one year of commercial software development experience and is looking to build a long-term career in product engineering.

You should be someone who:

• Who has around 1 year experience in software development, ideally in Java, React, Node.JS and AWS.
• Is naturally curious and wants to understand how and why things work.
• Enjoys solving problems rather than simply following instructions.
• Takes initiative and is comfortable asking questions when something isn't clear.
• Cares about producing good-quality software.
• Is honest about areas where you need to develop and actively looks for ways to improve.
• Is receptive to feedback and keen to learn from more experienced developers.
• Has an interest in understanding customers and the wider purpose behind the software being developed.
• Can take a pragmatic approach to development and understands that the simplest appropriate solution isn't always the most complicated one.
• Is comfortable experimenting with AI development tools or is enthusiastic about learning how to use them effectively.
• Can work collaboratively within a team and communicate effectively when working through problems.

Development & Support

You'll be supported throughout your development by experienced members of the engineering team.
