Maintenance Mechanic
About the Position: Red River Army Depot (RRAD) is located in northeast Texas, 19 miles west of Texarkana and approximately 170 miles northeast of Dallas. RRAD is near the corners of 4 states - Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. The depot's enormous maintenance mission includes the repair, rebuild, overhaul and conversion of tactical wheeled vehicles. Major duties
- Seals off windows and doors in existing walls, ensuring that bricks/blocks are laid so that new work blends with existing wall.
- Replaces, repairs and occasionally installs ceramic and glazed tile in showers and on bath and kitchen walls in troop or family housing.
- Plans and lays out work determining area to be repaired and removing damaged tile.
- Planes and sands completed articles to prescribed finish.
- Installs and or replaces glass or metal louvers in wood or metal doors.
- Installs linoleum or vinyl tile by preparing wood or concrete floor, measuring, matching, fitting, placing, cementing and smoothing.
- Operates melting pot for hot asphalt roofing.
- Keeps inspection sheets, logs, disposal manifests, etc., as required by law for appropriate asbestos project.
- Uses gloss, semi-gloss and special paints, enamels, varnishes, stains, lacquers and shellacs.
- Performs incidental operation of vehicles up to l-2 ton capacity, with or without front-axle drive, to transport crew, articles and materials to and from the work site.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision which includes journeyman level skill in a variety of trades such as masonry, carpentry, cabinetry/woodworking, maintenance mechanic, roofing, painter, concrete and cement pouring and finishing. I can 1) repair masonry areas using standard materials; 2) perform basic carpentry repairs such as replacing trim or simple frame components; and 3) replace individual tiles or performing simple flooring or painting tasks.- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Knowledge of Materials Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments Physical Effort: Moderate physical demand involving climbing, lifting of weights of 40 to 50 pounds for short intermittent periods, some heavy lifting and carrying of weights over 40 pounds for not over 20 percent of the time; holds overhead and attaches sheetrock weighing up to 60 pounds per sheet. Subject to falls from ladders, scaffolds, roofs, beams and trusses, loss of fingers or hands from operation of power cutting equipment, damage to eyes or puncture of skin from flying chips or splinters. Works in hot, cold, wet and freezing weather conditions. Working Conditions: Works inside and outside, during all weather conditions. When working in the shop, noise from power equipment and hammering is almost continuous, but can be spoken above. There is also exposure to dust and dirt while mixing mortar and plaster while handling various masonry and plastering materials. Frequently exposed to eye, skin, nose and lung irritation from glue, bonding chemicals, vapors, splinters, and sawdust. Frequently exposed to possible cuts and serious injuries from accidents while using woodworking machines. May be required to work in asbestos contaminated areas. Incumbent must not have any physical restrictions that would prevent the use of required safety equipment, respirators, protective clothing, dust mask, etc.
