Machine Tool Operator

About the Position: Red River Army Depot (RRAD) is located in northeast Texas, 19 miles west of Texarkana and approximately 170 miles northeast of Dallas. RRAD is near the corners of 4 states - Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. The depot's enormous maintenance mission includes the repair, rebuild, overhaul and conversion of tactical wheeled vehicles. Major duties

• Operate one or more conventional or computer numerical control machines to perform a specific machining operation in the machining of castings, forgings, or other raw stocks made of various metals, metal alloys, and other materials.
• Operate machines of the same type to carry out production runs involving standard operations.
• Control the machine feeds and speeds, changes and uses different cutting tools for successive operations, and makes minor changes in machine settings to maintain sizes or shape of the work piece.
• Operate in the automatic mode utilizing the feeds and speeds programmed.
• Insure that dimensions meet those prescribed by blueprints, sketches, or other instructions using standard measuring instruments.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Machine Tool Operator without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common duties, which include operating conventional machine tools during standard production runs, monitoring computer numerical control equipment in automatic mode, and aligning workpieces against designated reference points. I can adjust feed controls for size preservation. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Use Hand Tools for Machine Shop Ability to Use Shop Drawings Knowledge of Metals Measurement and Layout Operation of Machine Tools Technical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic) Physical Effort: Work requires standing, stooping, bending, and reaching. Incumbent will frequently handle, lift, and carry objects weighing up to 40 pounds. Sometimes required to lift items weighing in excess of 50 pounds with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside in areas that are usually noisy and dirty, and where there is a constant danger to the skin and eyes from flying metal chips and abrasive particles; skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, and abrasive compounds; danger to fingers, hands, and other parts of the body from cutting tools, grinding wheels, rotating pieces, and moving parts of machines.
