Data Specialist (Environmental/Shipping)
Angle Recruitment has partnered with a well established liner and bulk shipping group to find an Environmental Data Specialist who can bring order to how it collects, measures and reports its impact. Like every shipowner, the business has to report its carbon emissions, waste and water use. It burns fuel at sea, uses electricity ashore, sends crew and staff around the world, and buys goods and services from hundreds of suppliers. The rules for reporting all this are clear. The data behind it is not. Some figures come from systems, some from spreadsheets, and some from a vessel emailing numbers to the office. Each office does it a little differently, so the totals are hard to trust. Your job is to fix that, and make sure it stays fixed. You'll sit in Finance, reporting to the Finance Controller, because the priority is numbers that stand up to an auditor. You'll work closely with a small sustainability team of four, two on the fleet side and two in corporate, who know the business and the targets. Most of your focus will be on the liner business, with some support for the bulk side. In practice, you will: Set the rules. Turn group data policy into a practical way of working, with clear owners, controls and the evidence an auditor will ask for. Find the gaps. Map where every piece of carbon, waste and water data comes from, and spot the duplication, risks and manual workarounds. Check the numbers. Test data from across the business, spot what doesn't add up, and explain why. Deliver the tools. Build the case for practical tools and automation, then implement them within the systems that exist today. Crack Scope 3. Build a sensible approach to supplier, travel and crewing data, including business travel emissions and offsetting. Make it stick. Write clear guides and train the people who supply the data, so the process runs long after the two years are up. You'll bring hands on experience managing Scope 1 and 2 inventories under the GHG Protocol, and a good eye for whether data is clean. You'll have designed data processes and controls that held up to review, ideally with some exposure to Scope 3 and external assurance. Shipping knowledge is useful but not essential. The client is open to someone slightly earlier in their career, as long as the carbon accounting and data quality skills are genuinely there. In return, you'll get a clear brief, real influence across the business, and a competitive package. It's two years to build something that lasts.
