Medical Underwriter (Life & Health)
Employment type: Permanent, Full-time Location: Singapore Experience level: Senior Executive
ABOUT THE ROLE
Our client is a leading life insurer in Singapore with a long-established individual life and health portfolio.
They are hiring a Medical Underwriter into the Operations / Medical Underwriting team. This is a hands-on case assessment seat with its own underwriting authority — you will make the call on medical and financial risk for individual life and health applications, including cases with multiple co-existing conditions, and you will own each case end to end.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Assess medical and financial risk on individual life and health insurance applications, and issue decisions within your delegated authority — standard, rated, exclusion, postponement or decline
- Review complex cases with multiple medical conditions and risk factors, working from medical reports, laboratory results and specialist letters
- Apply company underwriting standards and reinsurer manuals consistently, and refer cases beyond your limit to senior underwriters or the reinsurer
- Carry out financial underwriting — assess sum assured against income, assets and stated need, and identify anti-selection
- Manage each customer request end to end, including requisitioning further evidence and following the case through to completion
- Support Financial Consultants on underwriting matters, including face-to-face service at the company's business centres, and explain decisions clearly without compromising medical confidentiality
- Contribute to underwriting projects, including digitalisation and the rollout of underwriting standards for new products
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- A degree in Nursing, Biomedical Science, Life Sciences or a related discipline
- At least 3 years assessing medical risk in an insurance setting. This includes life and health underwriting, and we will also consider strong medical or critical illness claims assessment experience
- Sound working knowledge of common medical conditions and how they are evaluated for insurance risk
- Familiarity with insurance regulations, disclosure obligations and individual life and health products
- Confident decision-making, and the composure to explain a rating or a decline to a distribution partner and hold the line
- Professional Qualifications - ALU, LOMA, ANZIIF or ACII qualification
