The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a professional aerospace engineer in support of the acquisition, development, or sustainment of weapon systems, subsystems, and/or support equipment.

Major duties

Provide technical leadership and oversight for MH-139A rotary-wing flight systems, including utilities and subsystems, flight controls, flying qualities, propulsion, airframe/structures, human factors, rotor systems, and armament systems. Lead airworthiness, safety-of-flight, and systems engineering assessments across development and sustainment activities, ensuring aircraft safety, suitability, mission effectiveness, and compliance with applicable military and commercial airworthiness standards. Identify, assess, and mitigate technical risks; lead complex failure investigations, root-cause analyses, and corrective-action implementation using established failure review and engineering methodologies. Direct and integrate aircraft integrity and subsystem-health efforts-including Aircraft Structural Integrity Program (ASIP), Mechanical Equipment and Subsystems Integrity Program (MECSIP), and Propulsion System Integrity Program (PSIP)-to manage fatigue, failure, readiness, and long-term platform safety risks. Supervise, mentor, and develop a diverse flight-systems engineering workforce; communicate technical findings and recommendations to program leadership and Air Force Global Strike Command stakeholders, while coordinating with functional engineering organizations to leverage enterprise resources.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed in the Individual Occupational Requirement for Engineers SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the next lower broadband NH-3, equivalent to the next lower grade GS-13 or equivalent in other pay systems. Specialized experience must include experience serving as an aerospace engineer in support of the acquisition, development, or sustainment of weapon systems, subsystems, and/or support equipment. The position is responsible for work related to the integration of aeronautics sciences within the broad arena of aviation. Considered the technical specialist for the organization in aerospace engineering assignments; employee provides technical leadership and management to ensure project/program success. Work encompasses several phases of the life-cycle management process in which the employee guides and evaluates the design and development activities of others. IDEAL CANDIDATE STATEMENT: The ideal candidate is an experienced supervisory engineer with a strong background in rotary-wing aircraft flight systems, systems engineering, airworthiness certification, safety-of-flight assessments, and technical risk management across both development and sustainment programs. They should be able to lead complex engineering investigations, direct integrity programs, communicate actionable recommendations to leadership, and mentor a diverse engineering workforce. A relevant ABET-accredited engineering degree, leadership experience, and the ability to meet Top Secret clearance and acquisition certification requirements are essential. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

  1. Knowledge of professional aerospace engineering concepts, principles, practices, standards, methods, techniques, materials, and equipment to effectively apply advanced engineering theories, principles, and concepts to project development, execution, and advisory services.
  2. Knowledge of development testing and evaluation sufficient to apply experimental theories and new applications to issues and provide technical advice and direction in support of weapon systems, subsystems, and/or support equipment.
  3. Knowledge of integrated air-vehicles, ground systems, and support equipment sufficient to plan, design, test, troubleshoot, evaluate, and oversee the development and/or sustainment of aerospace vehicles, systems, equipment, and components.
  4. Knowledge of other engineering disciplines and standard acquisition regulations, practices, and procedures.
  5. Ability to devise and evaluate criteria, parameters, characteristics, and interrelationships for design approaches, and to assess the impact of new technology on current systems and processes.
  6. Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and with technical accuracy, both orally and in writing, as well as work in a professional manner with peers, management, contractors, academia, and other agencies.
