The primary purpose of this position is to operate buses capable of carrying 16 or more passengers on public roads (or equivalent) in a full range of traffic conditions and at highway speeds.

Major duties

Drives one or more types of passenger buses which carry 16 or more passengers. Drives predetermined and/or scheduled routes or special runs. Drives one or more types of medium trucks, such as platform trucks, van trucks, stake trucks, wreckers, or dump trucks to transport supplies, materials, and equipment. Drives one or more types of passenger vehicles such as passenger vans and/or small shuttle buses. Performs operator maintenance, such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires, cleaning and washing of vehicles, and performing inspection checklists to ensure safe and proper operation. Maintains records and documents actions, such as operator inspection checklists/forms and accident/incident reports. Uses two-way radio (or other device) to maintain communications with dispatcher/supervisor on assignments and locations. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5700 Transportation/Mobile Equipment Operation Group, Motor Vehicle Operating,. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a Motor Vehicle Operator without more than normal supervision JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of and skill in operating buses capable of carrying 16 or more passengers or other vehicles with a GVW of more than 26,000 and up to 32,000 pounds. Knowledge of traffic and safety regulations, practices, and procedures pertaining to motor vehicle operation (buses). Knowledge of passenger safety rules including those regarding the use of seatbelts. Ability to communicate orally, and be courteous and responsive to the needs of the passengers. Ability to judge road/traffic conditions and read maps to determine the shortest and safest route. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. related to motor vehicle operation (buses), preventive maintenance, and passenger safety. Reliability and dependability to arrive at stops within prescribed time frames and to meet pickup and delivery deadlines. Physical Effort Physical effort is moderate to heavy. Work requires reaching, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Associated duties require stooping, bending, and climbing. Lifts and carries objects weighing up to 40 pounds and heavier objects with assistance. Working Conditions Drivers work mostly outside and operate vehicles in all kinds of traffic and weather on public roads (or equivalent), and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Drivers are exposed to dirt, fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents when loading and unloading the vehicle. They drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
