AFRY is one of the largest international power sector consulting and engineering companies,

with about 18,000 experts worldwide delivering sustainable solutions for future generations.

In the Asia-Pacific region, AFRY operates from multiple offices including Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala

Lumpur, Manila, Hanoi, Singapore, Pune, Noida and Taipei, with more than 500 experts globally

in Transmission & Distribution (T&D).  As part of our growing activities, we are strengthening our Power Systems Studies team to

support increasing demand for grid connection and transmission studies across Asia and

internationally. This role reports to the T&D System Studies Asia Department and is based in our

office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  This position is open to candidates who already have the legal right to work in the selected

country. Visa sponsorship is not provided.

Context:

Our T&D Power Systems team supports utilities, developers, and investors in addressing grid

integration challenges for generation and transmission projects, including renewable energy,

battery storage, and HVDC interconnections.  You will be part of a global team delivering power system studies across Asia-Pacific, Europe, the

Middle East, and Africa, contributing to both project execution and technical development.

Regular working days: Mon-Fri., 8 hours/day, 5 days/week  Responsibilities:

  1. Power system studies execution

Perform steady-state and dynamic power system studies, including load flow, contingency, short-circuit, RMS stability, voltage stability and reactive power assessments.  Develop and maintain network models using PSS®E and/or DIgSILENT PowerFactory  Define study assumptions, scenarios, and contingencies.  Interpret study results, identify network constraints and stability risks, and develop technically justified mitigation measures.  Conduct complex technical assessments and develop specialist solutions for power system challenges, including generator and converter model validation, dynamic model tuning, stability enhancement strategies, and mitigation of network constraints.   Investigate model convergence, initialization and dynamic performance issues, identify root causes, and implement robust technical solutions.

  1. Grid integration & renewable projects

Contribute to grid connection studies for: solar, wind, and battery energy storage systems (BESS), HVDC and other converter-based technologies   Assess system impacts of inverter-based resources and propose mitigation measures

  1. Project delivery & coordination

Lead the technical execution of studies from project initiation through final reporting with a high degree of independence and accountability.  Coordinate with internal teams for inputs, modelling, and validation  Review and validate work from junior engineers where required  Lead selected study tasks and provide technical guidance to junior engineers  Demonstrate a proactive approach to identifying problems, proposing practical solutions, testing them, and driving their implementation through to resolution.  Exercise sound engineering judgement by critically reviewing modelling assumptions, challenging simulation results where appropriate, and ensuring technical quality and consistency throughout the study.

  1. Reporting & client interaction

Prepare clear and structured technical reports and deliverables  Present results and conclusions to internal teams and clients  Support technical discussions with clients when required

  1. Continuous development

Contribute to internal knowledge sharing and technical improvement  Stay updated on developments in grid integration and power system analysis  Support the development and adoption of internal tools, automation scripts and AI-assisted workflows to improve engineering efficiency and study quality.

Experience  Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (Power Systems or Power System Study).  Typically 8-10+ years of experience in power system studies, either in Malaysia or Global  Experience in grid connection, transmission planning, or renewable integration projects/study   Strong knowledge and experience working with TNB network and grid requirements  Experience liaising and collaborating with TNB, GSO, and Single Buyer is highly desirable  Involvement in any ST schemes (LSS, CRESS, Selco, BESS) is an advantage  Exposure to both utility/TSO and developer-driven projects is an advantage  Technical competencies  Strong experience in load flow, contingency, short-circuit, power quality, voltage stability and RMS stability studies.  Demonstrated expertise in developing, tuning, calibrating and validating dynamic power system models, with the ability to troubleshoot complex modelling issues and deliver technically credible simulations suitable for engineering decision-making.  Ability to define study scope and assumptions, structure analyses independently, interpret and challenge results  Ability to critically assess simulation credibility by questioning modelling assumptions, validating results against engineering principles, and distinguishing modelling artefacts from genuine system behaviour.  Practical experience with renewable energy integration (solar, wind, BESS), HVDC or converter-based resources   Strong understanding of transmission planning criteria, grid codes, and power system operating principles.  Tools  Advanced hands-on experience with PSS®E and/or DIgSILENT Power Factory, including large-scale network modelling, automation workflows, and dynamic model implementation.  Ability to work with large-scale network models  Soft skills  Strong analytical and problem-solving skills  Ability to work independently and within international teams  Ability to work effectively under tight project deadlines while maintaining high technical quality across multiple concurrent assignments.  Experience in task leadership, study coordination, and mentoring junior engineers is an advantage  Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to present complex technical concepts clearly to clients and multidisciplinary teams.
