Junior DevOps Engineer
Must-have:PythonGitAzureCloudDevOpsCI/CDSecuritySeniorLeadJunior
The Junior DevOps Engineer builds foundational DevOps skills by supporting the maintenance of CI/CD pipelines, assisting with monitoring and alerting, and helping with basic infrastructure, access, and security administration tasks, all under the close supervision of more senior engineers. The role is expected to grow steadily in independence and technical scope as competence and confidence increase across the toolchain and internal platforms.
CI/CD Pipeline Support
- Assists with the maintenance and minor configuration changes of existing CI/CD pipelines under guidance from senior engineers.
- Monitors pipeline runs, flags failures, and helps triage straightforward build/deploy issues.
- Follows documented runbooks and change procedures when making pipeline adjustments.
- Escalates ambiguous or higher-risk pipeline changes to a senior engineer before proceeding.
Monitoring & Alerting Assistance
- Helps configure and maintain basic monitoring dashboards and alert rules under supervision.
- Performs first-line review of alerts and escalates genuine incidents promptly to senior engineers.
- Documents recurring alert patterns and contributes observations to runbook improvements.
- Learns the organisation's monitoring stack (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana) and standard thresholds.
Basic Infrastructure & Environment Tasks
- Assists with routine infrastructure tasks (e.g., environment provisioning support, configuration updates) under close supervision.
- Follows infrastructure-as-code templates and change processes rather than making ad-hoc changes.
- Documents steps taken and outcomes for tasks performed, to support knowledge transfer.
- Builds working familiarity with core cloud services and infrastructure tooling used by the team.
Access, Security & Platform Administration Support
- Assists with routine access management tasks (e.g., user provisioning/de-provisioning) following approved processes.
- Supports basic security hygiene tasks such as patch tracking and access reviews under supervision.
- Helps administer internal platforms (e.g., Bitrix24 and similar internal collaboration/CRM tools) for routine, well-defined requests.
- Escalates any anomalous access requests or potential security concerns immediately.
Ramp-Up and Learning Velocity
- Actively works through onboarding materials, toolchain documentation, and internal platform guides.
- Pairs frequently with senior DevOps engineers to build understanding of pipelines, infrastructure, and security practices.
- Tracks own learning goals and progress with support from a mentor or the DevOps Lead.
- Builds toward taking on progressively larger and less-supervised tasks.
Adherence to Standards and Process
- Follows documented change management, security, and operational procedures without bypassing approval gates.
- Uses agreed tools and ticketing systems consistently and accurately.
- Applies feedback from senior engineers and the DevOps Lead consistently in subsequent work.
- Raises process gaps or unclear documentation to the team rather than working around them.
- Bachelor's degree or diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field, OR a completed relevant bootcamp/certification path with a demonstrable practical portfolio.
- 0-2 years' experience in a DevOps, systems administration, or software development support capacity.
- Basic understanding of version control (e.g., Git) and branching workflows.
- Exposure to Linux/Windows server environments and basic scripting (e.g., Bash, PowerShell, Python).
- Some exposure to CI/CD concepts and tools (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps Pipelines).
- Basic understanding of networking fundamentals (DNS, TCP/IP, HTTP/HTTPS).
