About the Role
We are looking for a competent and detail-oriented Legal & Data Protection Officer to provide legal and compliance support across a range of business activities.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing practical legal advice, drafting and reviewing documents and agreements, supporting data protection compliance, identifying legal risks, and providing representation or coordinating with external legal professionals where necessary.
Key Responsibilities
Legal Advisory & Support
- Provide practical legal advice on business, employment, contractual, operational, and regulatory matters.
- Conduct legal research and interpret relevant laws and regulations.
- Identify potential legal risks and recommend appropriate actions.
- Advise on legal implications of proposed business activities, partnerships, services, and agreements.
Legal Documentation & Contracts
- Draft, review, and update contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.
- Prepare NDAs, service agreements, employment and consultancy agreements, partnership agreements, terms and conditions, policies, notices, letters, and other relevant documents.
- Review agreements received from clients, partners, vendors, and other third parties.
- Support contract negotiations and ensure agreements adequately protect the organisation’s interests.
Data Protection & Privacy
- Support compliance with applicable data protection and privacy laws, particularly the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA).
- Develop, review, and maintain privacy policies, data protection policies, consent forms, data processing agreements, and related documentation.
- Advise on the lawful collection, processing, storage, sharing, retention, and disposal of personal data.
- Review business processes involving personal information and identify potential privacy risks.
- Provide guidance on handling data protection complaints, incidents, and potential breaches.
- Support regulatory filings, documentation, assessments, and other data protection compliance requirements where applicable.
Regulatory & Compliance Matters
- Monitor relevant legal and regulatory developments affecting business operations.
- Provide support on corporate, employment, commercial, and regulatory compliance matters.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies, government agencies, external counsel, and other relevant professionals where necessary.
- Maintain and organise relevant legal and compliance records.
Legal Representation & Dispute Resolution
- Represent the organisation in appropriate legal, regulatory, administrative, or business-related matters where required and legally permitted.
- Liaise with external counsel on litigation, disputes, claims, demand letters, and other legal proceedings.
- Review legal notices and correspondence and recommend appropriate responses.
- Assist with dispute resolution and measures aimed at preventing future legal exposure.
Requirements
- LL.B from a recognised institution.
- Must be called to the Nigerian Bar and be in good standing.
- Relevant post-call experience in legal practice.
- Good knowledge of Nigerian commercial, contract, employment, and data protection laws.
- Good understanding of the Nigeria Data Protection Act and relevant regulatory requirements.
- Strong legal drafting, research, analytical, and negotiation skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to handle confidential information.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple legal matters effectively.
- Strong professional judgment, integrity, and discretion.
