The QD group is looking for a motivated postdoctoral researcher to develop methods for controlling the emission properties of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) by utilizing nanoparticles embedded in the devices. The work combines advanced nanofabrication methods, such as electron beam lithography, as well as OLED fabrication via evaporation and solution-based methods, and demanding characterization methods, such as Fourier-plane imaging. The goal also includes the commercialization of research results.

Your tasks and goals

A successful candidate will develop new nanoparticle lattice dynamics and geometries to improve the performance of OLED devices. Tasks include the design, fabrication, and experimental characterization of OLED devices. Fabrication will utilize the extensive facility infrastructure and the top-level cleanroom at Micronova, and characterizations will be performed in the QD group's optics laboratory with advanced measurement equipment. We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with strong practical experimental expertise and a deep understanding of organic electronics and nanophotonics.

The work is done in close collaboration with the group's theorists, who investigate nanostructures and device optimization using simulations. The goal is to develop precise control over specific emission properties, such as polarization, color, and angular distribution, while simultaneously revealing the lossy states of the devices and deepening the understanding of the system. Our aim is to commercialize the results of this research, focusing on a significant improvement in the efficiency of OLEDs and precise control of emission properties.

What we expect from you

We are looking for a talented and motivated postdoctoral researcher with excellent achievements. We require practical experience in nano- and OLED fabrication, characterization, and electronics. The applicant must have (or be soon to obtain) a doctoral degree in a relevant field. Good English language skills (oral and written) and a proven ability to publish research results are absolute requirements for the position. Proficiency in the Finnish language is not required. Applicants are expected to be motivated to conduct research at the highest international level.

What we offer

Aalto University follows the Finnish university salary system. The postdoctoral researcher's salary range is €4,229–€4,649 per month depending on previous experience, and employment contracts are initially for two years. The employment includes Aalto University's occupational healthcare. The main place of work is Aalto University's Otaniemi campus.

Join the QD group, led by Professor Päivi Törmä at Aalto University. Päivi Törmä is an internationally leading expert in nanophotonics and light-matter interactions, and she has conducted pioneering research on room-temperature Bose–Einstein condensation and polariton lasers in plasmonic nanoparticle systems. Recent research results can be found on Google Scholar. There is a preprint on arXiv regarding work related to OLED devices equipped with embedded nanoparticles.

The project's research infrastructure is at an excellent level. The Department of Applied Physics has a wide range of tools and instruments as well as the largest micro- and nanotechnology research center in the Nordics: Micronova. The QD group's advanced optics laboratory includes a femtosecond laser, two Fourier-plane imaging systems, electrical equipment such as sourcemeter units and oscilloscopes, and custom-built OLED characterization systems. The group is part of the Quantum Materials Flagship (Qmat) and a member of InstituteQ.

Aalto University has six schools, 16,000 students, and 400 professors. It is Finland's largest university, focusing on education and research in technology, science, economics, and art. The QD group operates on the Otaniemi campus in Espoo (10 km from Helsinki city center), which is one of Northern Europe's largest high-tech hubs.
