The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM) at Uppsala University constitutes a broad international environment for research and teaching. At IMBIM, basic research is conducted in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, tumor biology, comparative genetics, functional genomics, immunology, bacteriology, and virology. The department's research is primarily fundamental, but in its application, it has a clear connection and significance for health and disease in both animals and humans. A more detailed description can be found at Forskning – Institutionen för medicinsk biokemi och mikrobiologi – Uppsala universitet.

The research group Medical Inflammation Research (MIR), led by professor Rikard Holmdahl at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM), Uppsala University, conducts research with the goal of improving human health by identifying regulatory mechanisms in autoimmune diseases. As part of this research, several important genetic polymorphisms associated with autoimmune diseases have been identified in experimental animal models, and unique mouse strains have been developed.

We are seeking an experienced researcher to lead and coordinate projects focused on driving the research, development, and validation of humanized mouse models.

You will have the opportunity to collaborate with leading experts, work with advanced research resources, and contribute to new scientific discoveries that can contribute to future treatments for autoimmune diseases.

Tasks

You will work with collecting and compiling existing scientific evidence as well as generating new data to characterize the humanized mouse model for key actors in rheumatological research. The work also includes investigating the model's broader applications within other research areas, as well as being responsible for and administering the animal model platform for other researchers.

You will lead the planning, implementation, and reporting of in vivo and in vitro experiments to characterize and validate humanized mouse strains. The models shall be used to evaluate the effect of potential immunotherapies and generate mechanistic knowledge about treatments targeting autoimmune diseases and other conditions. The work also aims to answer central scientific questions that can contribute to the development of future treatments for autoimmune diseases.

The work includes immunological research, including in vivo experiments, immunological analyses, flow cytometry, and expression analyses.

The role also includes developing experimental project proposals for other users of the platform, with the goal of attracting new research collaborations, scientific interest, and external funding opportunities. You are also expected to contribute to scientific publications as well as participate in the supervision of master's students and teaching.

Qualifications

A doctoral degree in biochemistry, biotechnology, immunology, or a related field, or a foreign degree assessed to correspond to a doctoral degree. The eligibility requirements must be met no later than the time of the decision on employment. Several years of experience working with animal models. Relevant advanced research experience in the handling and breeding of mice, genotyping, and in vivo experimental studies, including surgical procedures, as well as experience with disease models and laboratory work in cell biology. Good knowledge of genetics, immunology, and biochemistry. Experience in biostatistical analysis, flow cytometry, antibody-based immunological analyses, and in vivo models for autoimmune diseases. Very good knowledge of English, both oral and written.

Great importance will be placed on personal suitability. We are looking for a creative, engaged, and motivated researcher who enjoys working in teams. You are expected to have very good collaborative skills and at the same time be able to work independently, take your own initiatives, and drive research projects forward.
