Director of the Centro de Estudios Atitlán

Lead the strategy, scientific vision, and management capacity to direct the Centro de Estudios Atitlán and administer the Finca San Andrés Semetabaj, driving the development of high-impact scientific research, academic training, and community engagement. The person will be responsible for leading the formulation and execution of research projects, managing national and international funds, strengthening scientific production, and providing integral administration of the Centro de Estudios Atitlán and the Finca San Andrés Semetabaj as a strategic infrastructure for research, teaching, and university extension, ensuring the efficient and sustainable use of resources and compliance with institutional objectives. The Centro de Estudios de Atitlán -CEA- is a multidisciplinary center, founded in 2010 following the severe cyanobacteria bloom that affected Lake Atitlán in 2009. It is a generator, integrator, trainer, coordinator, and communicator of scientific research in Lake Atitlán and its basin, in the areas of ecological state, environment, and the health of its inhabitants. It promotes actions and solutions oriented toward the sustainable development of the region and the country, as well as the valorization of ancestral, cultural, and natural heritage, through research, education, and extension programs. It holds alliances with academic and research institutions, governmental and non-governmental organizations, local, national, and international, to develop research and actions of local, national, regional, and global significance. Main responsibilities: Lead the formulation, direction, and execution of scientific research projects with national and international impact. Manage and ensure the procurement of national and international financing to strengthen the sustainability of the Center and the development of research. Plan, administer, and control the budget of the Center and the Finca San Andrés Semetabaj, guaranteeing the efficient, transparent, and sustainable use of financial resources, as well as compliance with institutional guidelines and commitments made with funding entities. Develop and execute the Strategic Plan and the Annual Operating Plan of the Center, ensuring the fulfillment of goals, indicators, and institutional objectives. Supervise the technical, administrative, and financial execution of research projects, guaranteeing compliance with schedules, budgets, deliverables, and quality standards. Promote scientific production through publications, dissemination of knowledge, technological transfer, and generation of academic impact. Strengthen the integration between research, teaching, and community engagement, promoting the participation of students, teachers, and researchers in institutional projects. Manage strategic alliances and agreements with national and international institutions to strengthen scientific and academic cooperation. Lead and develop multidisciplinary teams, promoting a culture of innovation, collaboration, excellence, and continuous improvement. Integrally administer the Finca San Andrés Semetabaj, ensuring the planning and supervision of its administrative, financial, environmental, agricultural, maintenance, and security operations, guaranteeing the efficient use of human, technical, material, and natural resources, as well as the conservation of institutional heritage. Guarantee the availability and proper functioning of the farm for the development of research, teaching, university extension, and specialized service activities. Monitor the financial, operational, and scientific performance of the Center and the Farm through management indicators, driving continuous improvement and institutional sustainability. Ensure compliance with institutional, environmental, occupational safety, and other applicable legal regulations.
Academic background Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Biology, Environmental Sciences, Forestry Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field. Master's degree in Research, Sciences, Environmental Management, Administration, or a related discipline. Doctorate desirable. Experience Five years in the direction of research centers, scientific programs, or academic units. Experience in project execution and administration. Experience in strategic management, budgetary administration, and leadership of multidisciplinary teams. Desirable experience in the administration of scientific infrastructure, natural resources, experimental stations, or research farms. Languages Intermediate - advanced English. Knowledge Project and budget administration. Strategic planning. Environmental management and sustainability. Research and performance indicators. Microsoft Office and administrative and financial management tools.
Work schedule: Monday to Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., according to the operational needs of the Instituto de Investigaciones. Workplace: Availability to work at the Campus Altiplano of the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, located at Km. 137, Caserío Xolbé, Cantón El Tablón, Sololá, Guatemala, as well as to travel to other institutional sites or locations as the functions of the position require.
