Guide and cultural communicator

Tromsø Lapland is seeking communicators of Sámi culture for the winter season at our camp on Breivikeidet.

As a guide with us, you will meet guests from all over the world and give them a personal, educational, and authentic encounter with Sámi culture. The work is suitable for you who enjoy people, wish to share your own knowledge, and are simultaneously curious to learn more.

About the position

As a Sámi guide and cultural communicator, you will be responsible for both small and large groups of guests of various ages and from many different countries.

The tasks involve, among other things, to:

  • communicate Sámi culture, history, and traditions
  • share personal experiences, stories, and perspectives
  • tell about reindeer husbandry and the importance of reindeer in Sámi culture
  • teach guests how to interact with reindeer in a safe and respectful manner
  • follow and guide guests during reindeer feeding in the enclosure
  • showcase and tell about duodji, Sámi art, music, and other cultural expressions
  • serve food as well as warm and cold drinks to the guests
  • assist with cleaning and simple practical tasks related to serving and the execution of the tours
  • pose for pictures and contribute to ensuring guests get good memories from the visit

In this position, you as a person are an important part of the experience. We are therefore looking for you who thrive on meeting people, are comfortable standing in front of groups, and wish to communicate Sámi culture in a natural, respectful, and engaging way.

Your story is important

We do not work with fixed scripts on our tours. We believe that the best communication arises when the guides are allowed to use their own voice, share their own story, and put their personal touch on the experience.

Sámi culture is diverse, and our guides have different backgrounds, knowledge, and experience. Therefore, there is no one right way to tell it.

You do not need to know everything before you begin. You will receive training in the topics and tasks you do not feel confident in, with support from experienced colleagues.

At the same time, perhaps you have knowledge, stories, or experiences that others do not have. With us, we want a work environment where colleagues learn from each other, share what they can, and together develop the communication further.

The most important thing is that you wish to communicate Sámi culture, are motivated to learn more, and want to contribute with what you yourself can.

Who are we looking for?

The position involves personal communication of Sámi culture, background, and belonging. For this reason, we are seeking persons with a Sámi background for this position.

We are looking for you who:

  • wish to communicate Sámi culture, history, and traditions
  • are confident, open, and comfortable speaking in front of groups
  • like meeting people from different countries and cultures
  • can communicate in a personal, clear, and engaging way
  • are service-oriented and comfortable with serving food and drink
  • are responsible and concerned with the safety of both the guests and the reindeer
  • are willing to learn and wish to share your own knowledge with colleagues
  • can work independently and at the same time collaborate well with others
  • contribute to an inclusive and pleasant work environment

The working language is English. You must therefore master English well and be able to communicate culture, history, and practical information in a clear, natural, and engaging way.

Knowledge of Sámi, Norwegian, or other languages is an advantage but not a requirement.

Workplace, season, and working hours

The season lasts from October 1st through April 30th.

The tours take place at our camp on Breivikeidet, approximately 45 minutes from Tromsø.

We offer both shift-based positions and part-time work throughout the season. Part-time positions are well-suited to be combined with studies, other work, or other commitments.

We conduct three tours per day, with bus departures from Tromsø at:

  • 10.00
  • 13.00
  • 18.00

You can travel to and from work with our buses from Tromsø. Employees working in shifts can live with us on Breivikeidet during the period they are on duty.

What do we offer?

At Tromsø Lapland, you get:

  • competitive salary and good working conditions
  • necessary work clothing, including work kofte, shoes, and other relevant equipment
  • thorough training and opportunities for professional development
  • support and guidance from experienced colleagues
  • food, transport, and accommodation included while you are on duty
  • an international workplace with guests from all over the world
  • pleasant colleagues with different knowledge, experience, and backgrounds
  • a social, educational, and varied workday
  • the opportunity to work with Sámi cultural communication in beautiful surroundings on Breivikeidet

How to apply

Send us a short presentation of yourself, preferably with pictures, and tell us a bit about yourself, your connection to Sámi culture, and why you wish to work as a cultural communicator with us.

You can send this to work@tromsolapland.no

Feel free to tell us about relevant experience, language skills, interests, or other skills you believe may be useful for the position. If you have experience with duodji, joik, or have worked in reindeer husbandry, it is useful, but not a requirement.

The most important thing is not that you know everything beforehand, but that you want to learn, share, and contribute.
