PhD student in mathematics didactics - mathematical giftedness in teacher education
At the Department of Subject Didactics, research is conducted on learning and teaching in relation to various subjects across all stages of the education system. Research in mathematics didactics consists of a wide spectrum of studies that connect to many different theoretical perspectives and where various qualitative and quantitative methods are used. More information about us can be found here: Matematikdidaktik - Stockholmsuniversitet. Project description The doctoral student's dissertation work will be carried out within the framework of the doctoral program in mathematics didactics. The dissertation project aims at how special mathematical giftedness in mathematics is treated in teacher education for mathematics. The project may, for example, address teacher students' perceptions of students with special mathematical giftedness, possibly in relation to perceptions of students with difficulties. The project may also address how future teachers are prepared to teach students with special mathematical giftedness, for example, how university-based and practice-based training (VFU) collaborate regarding students with special mathematical giftedness; it may also address teacher students' knowledge in relation to the project's focus. The empirical studies shall be conducted in Swedish teacher education. Data may, for example, consist of observations, interviews, surveys, and documents. The goal is to contribute research-based knowledge that strengthens the work of meeting students' different prerequisites in mathematics teaching. Eligibility requirements To be admitted to doctoral education, the applicant must have basic and special eligibility. Eligibility must be fulfilled no later than the last application date. Basic eligibility for education at the doctoral level is held by those who have completed a degree at an advanced level, fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at an advanced level, or in some other way, within or outside the country, acquired knowledge mainly corresponding to this.
The university may, for an individual applicant, grant an exemption from the requirement of basic eligibility if there are special reasons (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance). Decisions on exemptions are made by the Dean upon request from the departmental board. For special eligibility to be admitted to doctoral education in mathematics didactics with a focus on school mathematics (preschool, compulsory school, and upper secondary school), it is required that the applicant has undergone teacher education including mathematics, or alternatively has passed courses within a subject area of direct relevance to the focus of the education. Passed courses must correspond to at least 90 hp, as well as at least 30 hp at an advanced level in mathematics didactics, mathematics, or a similar relevant major, of which at least 15 hp is a thesis. For special eligibility, it is required that the applicant masters either Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, or English, i.e., the ability to read, speak, and write in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, or English. Any assessment of equivalence regarding eligibility is made by the department's Research Committee and decisions are made by the departmental board. Selection Selection among applicants is made with regard to the ability to undertake education at the doctoral level. Criteria used to assess this ability are: Documented subject knowledge with relevance to the research area. Assessment is made with regard to both depth and breadth in previous education. Previous scientific production. Based on theses from undergraduate and advanced levels as well as, where applicable, other written scientific production, the applicant's ability to undertake the education is assessed. Research plan. In connection with the application, the applicant must describe their intended research area. The description must include a name for the project, problem formulation(s), and a sketch of the implementation of the research work and be a maximum of 2000 words (for further instructions see: www.su.se/enheter/institutionen-for-amnesdidaktik/forskning/borja-forska/instruktioner-for-projektbeskrivning-i-doktorandansokan). The plan is assessed with respect to scientific quality, relevance in relation to the project description, and feasibility within a given timeframe (i.e., during a period corresponding to four years of full-time education). Available supervisory competence. Ability to cooperate. The applicant's ability to cooperate is assessed based on, e.g., references, certificates, or interviews. Ability to express yourself orally and in writing in English; it is also meritorious if you have the ability to express yourself orally and in writing in Swedish.
Work samples may be performed in connection with interviews to demonstrate abilities relevant to the doctoral education. Admission order for doctoral education at Stockholms universitet.
