Traffic Operator
About the position
Statens vegvesen has a vacancy for a traffic operator at Vegtrafikksentralen (VTS), section west.
Vegtrafikksentralen is Statens vegvesen's operative emergency unit and is staffed 24/7, all year round. Their national task is to monitor and manage road traffic for the county municipalities, Statens vegvesen, and Nye Veier. They issue warnings and convey information about the status and incidents on the road network. The five centers are located in Oslo, Porsgrunn, Bergen, Trondheim, and Mosjøen, and each monitors its own geographical area.
The office location for this position is Bergen.
VTS is open 24 hours a day, and all traffic operators work in shifts, including every 3rd weekend, in a 3-shift plan with day, evening, and night shifts.
Tasks
The most important tasks of a traffic operator are the management and monitoring of the road network and road traffic, as well as the dissemination of traffic information. The traffic messages we create regarding obstacles on the road network are distributed via vegvesen.no/trafikk. Additionally, the Vegtrafikksentralene have close contact with the media every day, and we also serve the public telephone 175. During incidents, VTS must take responsibility and implement necessary measures. This involves extensive use of data tools with logging, remote control of technical installations, handling technical alarms, notification, and cooperation with contractors and the police.
During special incidents, such as traffic accidents or incidents in tunnels, a traffic operator may receive emergency calls, handle many tasks simultaneously, and still have the ability to assess situations from a safety perspective. This requires close cooperation with colleagues, emergency services, contractors, road owners, and dialogue with the public and media. You will also provide decision support for the operation and maintenance of roads and road facilities.
