Job Title: PhD – Safety Contracts for Physical AI (w/m/div.)

Job Description: The conception and development of innovative safety contracts will be your central focus. You will establish formal runtime interfaces to ensure secure interaction between decision-making and control in autonomous systems. You will define precise assumptions, guarantees, and adaptation rules for modular autonomy stacks to secure system integrity across various abstraction levels. Furthermore, you will utilize advanced methods of optimal control, sequential decision-making under uncertainty, and Reinforcement Learning to develop robust and high-performance solutions. Using Machine Learning, you will derive feasibility margins, uncertainties, and the safety contracts themselves from real-world data. A key objective is the transfer of research results into concrete applications – particularly in the field of vehicle motion control and autonomous driving – to safely bridge the gap between high-level decisions and physical reality. Last but not least, you will make a significant contribution to designing learning-based autonomy modularly from the ground up, ensuring safety by design, and enabling runtime verification.

Qualifications:

  • Education: You hold an excellent Master's degree (or an equivalent degree) in Control Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Experience and Knowledge: You bring profound knowledge in optimization or control engineering as well as very good programming skills in Python.
  • Personality and Working Style: You are enthusiastic about technical challenges, enjoy developing solutions in interdisciplinary and diverse teams, and implement them up to the functional model. You are ready to take initiative and assume responsibility. Additionally, you approach tasks systematically and methodically, with a consistent focus on finding solutions and the ambition to deliver high-quality results.
  • Languages: Very good English skills; German skills are an advantage.
